Sounds like and is about all I think of that happens is the previously mentioned puddling in the intake.
That's what happened to mine. It occurred under load and low rpm though in my case.

What size fuel and N2O jets are you using?
Did you let off and get back into it?

just guessing - if you were in gear and spraying at 6000 but not WOT you would have more nitrous coming into the intake than going out . Hence the buildup and BOOM effect .

Full throttle switch, can only spray at WOT if i am correct with his setup

Correct. This kit uses TPS position to activate the system. Calibrated off the throttle pedal full down and reads voltage from the TPS.

Phish806 01-12-2009 09:35 PM

I agree with Easy. a - full throttle slight out then back in - motion coudl have caused this to happen quite easily.

Brettus 01-12-2009 09:46 PM

OK -bad guess .
That sucks that you can't let off the throttle and not have this happen though ....

Phish806 01-12-2009 09:50 PM

I am hoping that my type of install will help keep this thing from happening. but it could do the same thing just be a little worse by blowing the UIM apart or hurtin the motor. oh well, one of the chances all the Nitrous users take i suppose.

Easy_E1 01-12-2009 10:03 PM

If you let off and let the throttle body shut the engine suddenly looses vacuum and what little bit or a lot of fuel that was on it's way before being so rudely interrupted by the throttle closing.
Well it stuck all over in the intake and leaked down the LIM and hit a hot rotor and BOOM!

Most people don't realize the amount of N2O and fuel that is coming out of that Nitrous Nozzle.
If the flow suddenly stops or gets cut off at the right moment, yes you can create the environment for the backfire.

I let off of the throttle enough to stop the N2O and still have manifold vacuum to clean my pipes. You can hear it burbling on deceleration.
Nitrous is our friend. Treat it kindly and it will be good to you.

Yeah I figured puddling is the culprit because when I took apart the intake 2 days ago to re-tighten the throttle body there was a crap load of fuel in the accordion tube. When the thing happened today I took apart my intake box then a shined a flashlight up through the intake and I noticed there was alot of fluid in the accordion tube again.. probably fuel again.. what could be causing this?

As to what happened.. I downshifted into 2nd and that put me at ~5,500 rpm.. I armed the nitrous and then put the pedal to the floor.. and then 2 second later POP.. I didn't go off and on.. I did mention in my build though that my nitrous seems to active at a TINY bit LESS than WOT no matter how many time I program it.. for some reason.

I was using the 65hp jets.

My car is still very driveable though it stutters a bit at idle. I figure that is because the 2 intake screens are gone and my MAF is being held on by duct tape because the two screws that used to be holding it where blown off... also my air filter is fubared..

Honestly though, and I only ask because I'd like to learn, how does that affect this "puddling". I've been using them for a week now and they've been fine.. up until now and we don't know that is what caused it?

Both times that I have had my intake apart post-nitrous install I've had a bunch of fuel in the accordion tube. I had to stick a towel in there to soak it up.

Not related?

alz0rz 01-13-2009 12:58 AM

Definitely fuel.. I remember taking apart the intake and I went nuts because I had a STRONG fuel scent. I thought that I was leaking at the ZEX module because you now how much of a pain that airbox is to get out with the spacer and I was pushing and tugging so I thought I might have gotten the hose loose or something.. it wasn't that. Then I looked in the accordion tube and atleast 3 of the folds were saturated in gasoline for sure.

Got a great deal on the airbox from G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY.. so I'll be back spraying soon enough!

Yeah... I hope it's not an underlying problem with the nozzle itself or the module. Remember my module is a bit weird anyway with it activating before the ECU reports "true" WOT.

On top of that.. to be perfectly honest - Nitrous sure is FUN, the power IS there, but it may have just not been my thing.

I have something to think about until I get the new intake box in.

Wow.. I hadn't thought of it that way. Definitely sounds plausible that the one or bother of the solenoids may be activating before they need too and this WOT bug I have could be related..

I will call and see what arrangements can be made. How would I "cap" the fuel line when I have to drive around without the module for a few days? Nitrous line I can just close the bottle.

Since it will be a vacuum leak if left open I would thread in one of the red caps that came on the hoses from Zex.

I was more worried about fuel spewing out? =X

Oops, I was thinking nozzle side. My bad. Take the fuel line off at the barbed T-fitting, remove the right-angle threaded adapter, and install your unused Allen-head cap that came with the Spacer. They are both 1/8" NPT threads.

See how quick I devise these solutions? :lol2: And it costs you nothing for parts!

Oh jeez - oh where oh where did I put that little guy :eyetwitch !

I think we are seeing indicators of a different problem altogether; first ya lose your .017 jet and now the plug you removed to install the nozzle. Haven't you yet learned to lose/throw away NOTHING! :)

Look around for both and if you cannot find either one I may have some extras laying around because I keep nearly EVERYTHING!;)

I'll buy both off you!

Hahalolol O I just peed my pants! :(

This is turning into a customer service lesson :P

But I will say what all the n00bs are thinking, nitrous is too scary for me ;)

Big Money Pit 01-13-2009 12:00 PM

ok, this thread has sold me on nitrous.

problem is...

i'm mechanically inclined, but not electrically. i'm really going to need someone to hold my hand during that part, because i don't know the first thing about wiring.

i can do anything... ANYTHING... except wiring. i can even weld, machine, and otherwise fabricate, fix or put together anything.

but not basic wiring. nope.

alz0rz 01-13-2009 12:31 PM

I would have thought this thread turns people -away- from nitrous, based on the pics on page 5, lol!

The wiring really isn't that hard.

ZEX module - red wire goes to the cabin switch (power source), black wire goes to ground, white wire goes to the tps signal cable on the throttle body harness.

then on the incabin switch - one end goes to a circuit that is only on (12v) when the key is "ON" such as the accessory circuit and the other end is the red wire from the module.

that's it!

Big Money Pit 01-13-2009 12:33 PM

if i do all the work myself, am i looking at paying the same as alz0rz for all of the parts? i'm just looking for a pretty basic system with a warmer, i guess. i won't be using it much, as i don't drive the car much at all.

i just want something that's bulletproof.

alz0rz 01-13-2009 12:37 PM

You can get a good deal if you get the entire kit from Charles, bottle warmer and all. A bottle pressure gauge is good to know the general psi you're at.. $45. Maybe a purge kit may be a good idea as well.

With what happened to me yesterday and the fact that this is one hell of a drug (bottle refills) I was thinking it over last night as to whether just sell my entire setup. My tuition payment will benefit, for sure.

sweet! So thats where my old intake went....
