Recently purchased a 2004 RX-8 with all the bells and whistles, Including NAV...

I wanted to install the XM radio Sky Fi2 unit, but can't seem to locate a good place to hook it up...anyone install it on theirs or have any suggestions on a good place to install it with easy access, but without damaging the center console or drilling any holes that can be seen? I would prefer to have it firmly mounted....Appreciate any suggestions...

I finished it last night....

No holes no cutting....

The Pro-Fit mount is very sturdy an leaves no marks on your console if removed....

 

hey modena i have a question, which mount did you get? i have the skifi 2 also but i didnt install it yet. also how did you get it to work? i got the car kit and it comes witht he cassette thingy but i dont have a cassette tape.

No cutting and now screws either.
No need for the cassette adapter, the Delphi 2 has a wireless transmitter,
Later if you want you could get the PIE adapter and go that route.
But for me it works great!
Hardly any FM stations here in ST Louis that interfere with the wireless mod.
Power comes from the cigarette lighter, easy to get to when you remove the shifter
Console assembly...

2 questions:

I'm assumiong this works with a Roady 2? If so, how do you mount the unit to the clip?

Also, how did you tie into the cig lighter?

Should work with the Roady to...
(But not as nice sins it has no docking cradle)
The back on the cradle on the SkyFi can be removed and mounted with screws to the Proclip mount.

As for the power to the unit, I opened it up and soldered 2 wires to the plug,
And tapped in the cigarette lighter socket from behind....
Hope this makes sense.

 

So you just ordered one piece from ProClip? It looks like for most application that you must order the clip and the mount for your specific unit. My Roady 2 does have a removable "clip" on the back.

Enter Mazda, enter RX8 and year,
It will spit out a page with 2 mounts; I got the one that attaches to the side console...
You only need that one...
Sins your Roady has the back clip the install will work flawlessly.
You just need to screw the clip on the mount and you are golden!

How difficult was it to tap into the cigarette lighter from behind. Did you have to remove any of the center console paneling to get to it?

I really like that setup and am hoping to do it on my 8 as well. Your help here is appreciated.

 

It is not difficult at all; the car is very well screwed together.
Slide cup holder compartment open,
Remove shift ****,
Pull gently on the assembly around the shifter,
Put a towel underneath the part to avoid scratches, No need to disconnect the heated seats or Nav controller. You don't need a lot of room.
Remove 2 screws from the ashtray box , pull it back and disconnect the power plug from the back,
Yellow is hot (+), the other ground (-)
The power cable and sat antenna cable can be routed behind the right panel
Were the Proclip mount is...
That way all wires are hidden....

Finally had the nerve to remove the radio, removing the connectors and the hidden bolt was not that bad, but the radio was stuck! (Top clips were on very tight and I didn't wanted to break or damage the dash)
Tomorrow the Mazda Pie adaptor should be in and no more modulation!
Sins the car is apart I can snap pictures if anybody needs them, let me know and I will post them.

I wanted to post a follow up to this as I just installed my SkyFi2 in my 8 this past weekend using the ProClip and the PIE aux in adapter.

First, thanks to Modena for pointing me to the ProClip and the pictures.

The thing I didn't "get" or notice in the pictures is that you do NOT want to put the SkyFi cradle centered on the ProClip.

I took the back off the cradle and held it up to the ProClip out of the car and saw that "wow, all four of the mounting holes match up perfectly with pre-drilled holes in the clip" - so I put 4 machine screws, lock-washers, and nuts on there to hold the cradle to the clip. When I got the clip installed I noticed the cradle was too far to the left - the ashtray door would not open and it was hard to adjust the "text" and temp controls. So I removed the cradle, re-attached it about 1/2 way over to the right (so the cradle covers only the right side of the face of the ProClip) using 3m double-sticky tape. I also drilled a couple of holes and used 2 screws/lock washers/nuts.

So if you have a SkyFi or SkyFi2 don't be tempted to use the 4 holes that line up perfect between the clip and the cradle or you will be re-doing your install like I did
