What's this on my dash?

Between the glove box and the radio is a round plug. Can anyone tell me what this is? It must be either a unpopulated option (button or light), or a cover for a mounting screw or bolt.

What's under it? Is it hard to get off without causing damage. Could I use this for a spot to mount an I-POD?

Thanks!

Jeff

It's just an empty hole for some switch--you can pop it out pretty easily. It has tabs on either side to latch it into the dash. I actually have a CB Mic/Spkr hanging from it--had to use contact cement to get it to stay in when I hit hard bumps.

There's only a hole under that plug - and as keyek said, it's easy to pop the plug out.
I used that space to relocate my cig lighter socket, because the ashtray was taken by my MP3 player's wired remote.

That is an hole for indicator which shows if the passenger seat airbag is cancelled.
I am not sure which country has this option, but at least we do not have that option in Japan.

It's passenger air bag off warning light on UK model.
For when you have a child seat in the front.

airbag bypass switch

The right side of this picture will fit in the hole. This has a light in it.
The left side is airbag bypass switch.

We do not have this option in Japan, I took this picture at a Mazda "export" parts shop

Be very careful when drilling the hole because the prongs on the back snap off easily. I clamped the piece as well as I could and drilled holes starting small and progressively getting larger. This is because drilling a big hole all at once will cause the drill bit to bite into the piece and ripping it off the clamps, tearing the prongs.
