Most of the plastics in the dash are polypropylene. The piano black finish is achieved with a film inserted into the mold prior to injection of the polypropylene behind it. Think of it as a cupcake liner inserted into the pan before the batter is poured in.

Correct! But I think it´s been clearcoated as well.... If you want to achieve the same finnish yourself just paint the surface black (no gloss) and clearcoat it a couple of times. Looks exactly the same.

There is no clearcoat ... it is just the film. Several companies make it ... GE and Bayer for example. Yes, you can simulate it with paint and several coats of clear.

Ok, I have a little gouge in my dash. What is the best way to fix it?

I was going to use this
http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?i...emType=PRODUCT
But since there is polypropylene in our dash I guess I cannot.

That stuff is made by Urethane Supply Company ... they are a well known plastics repair company ... if they say it does not work on polypropylene you can count on it.

As for repairing a gouge in the piano black ... I'd recommend just going to MAZDA and getting a replacement piece. Alternatively ... give Paul a shout here:

... see if has the part you need.
