Voodoo shift **** review

So this the Voodoo shift **** officially my first "mod" on my 07 Stormy Blue RX-8.

I am planning on getting the short shifter in a couple of weeks but figured the shift **** would be a good place to start out.

Looks:

(Not picture from my car, just stock image of the actual ****)

I got the Pearl Magnum and I have to say it goes well with my interior. I got the Sport trim level so everything is cloth and there's some brushed aluminum here and there and the Voodoo **** looks right at home.

Feel:
So I've had experience with 2 stick shift cars in my life. An old 93 Saturn and my current Rx-8. I liked the OEM Mazda ****, there was nothing wrong with it, especially compared to the crazy long throw of the 93 Saturn, but damn the Voodoo feels nice in my hands. I put around 50 miles on it today, in stop and go Berkeley traffic, right after I installed it.
I now hold my shifter similar to how I hold a mouse, more of a fingertip grip than anything else.
I find it easier to shift from 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th with the new grip compared to the OEM grip, something about how I grasp the **** now. I also like it being slightly lower than the OEM **** and I can't wait to get the short shifter in the next couple of weeks.
The Voodoo Magnum is actually slightly lighter than the OEM ****, I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference in terms of shift feel.

Cons? :
I'm slightly worried about what will happen when CA weather gets warmer. I'm afraid the solid aluminum will heat up quickly in the sun. -_-

Congrats on your first mod!
I bought the AFE SS as my second mod after the clear corners. The Voodoo was recent followed by the leather boot in the picture.

The VooDoo gets cold in the winter and warm after the tranny is warmed up. In summer I think it's going to get hot.

But the feel through this setup is unmatched. BTW, The AFE SS is still the best mod for the car

I have the voodoo pearl shift **** in Florida, it gets warm but not hot in the summer. Nothing to worry about. I am more curious why you 2 didnt get the shift pattern engraved?

I could give some smart-*** answer but the truth is that I didn't know you could get that when I ordered!
Oh well. I still know where all the gears are.

The reason I didn't get it engraved is because the knobmeister never responded to my emails and queries. -_-

Also, I don't look down when I shift, and nobody but me is touching this car for a long long time.

Mine was from Redline but Polak also sells them on this site. You customize the colours with either source.

Don't forget to change you transmission fluid to synthetic for full enjoyment!
Change the differential fluid while you're at it.

a friend of mine has a voodoo **** with H pattern engraved on the top in his S2000. he bought the car used with the **** already there. i assume when the **** was first installed the H pattern was straight. when he obtained the car the top of the H pattern was pointed at around 2o'clock. now its pointing at around 4o'clock. and this is the reason i dont want the H pattern engraved on my voodoo when i get one besides, i really like the clean H-patternless look

thanks for the review, cant wait to get a voodoo of my own!

So exactly how hot does this **** get? Like, "damn, I have to shift again" hot or like, "WTF!" hot?

Well w/ you in the Bay Area like me, I think we're fine.
You could always throw a hat over it when parked or something if you're that concerned. But when driving, it doesn't get warm at all.

Is there a nut underneath it?

This is not difficult to fix.

I agree the AFE ss is awesome except for the increased vibration and noise. I was able to eliminate about 80% of both with a simple trick. First, rap all exposed metal with some tennis racket handle tape, the real thin kind that is self-adhering and slightly spongy, it is good sound insulator. Then go to any sporting goods store that sells archery supplies and get a set of Sims' Limbsavers, the kind that have a plastic back up plate to mount on bow limbs, they are about 1 1/4" in diameter, remove the plastic plate and cut a small hole (an X) in the center to allow the threaded portion of the ss to go through it. Insert it as far as it will go and then thread your **** as far as it will go so the Sims is compressde about 50%. Now you will feel very little vibration or noise even while holding the **** in neutral or at high speed! I can post pix but need to remove boot so if anyone is interested I will.

I just bought a RX-8 and the first thing i did was move the textured-black voodoo **** from my Miata to the new car. I didn't like the rotor-shaped ****, it just wasn't comfortable.

The textured black Voodoo doesn't get as hot as the polished ones, and I've never had a time where I couldn't drive the car b/c of it. The lighter **** does allow more vibrations and notchiness to get to your hand.

I got the spun finish because it looked like the pearl would make my hand sweaty. Sry crappy cell phone pic.

I'm seriously thinking about getting either the Magnum Pearl or Magnum Spun...

which better matches the aluminum trim of the interior?

also how durable is the coating? my stock **** is scuffed up from my class ring...do you think these ***** can hold up to ring abuse without getting damaged?

if it's 90 deg out and your car is sitting out in the sun without a sunshade or tint, the **** pretty much burns and gives a "WTF? Hot!" rxn. a layer of cloth (your sleeve (sp?), sock, or hat) ameliorates the problem tho...
