using steering wheel buttons w/ aftermarket stereo
Yes, if your aftermarket stereo has an IR sensor on it for use with a remote. There is a kit that will take the steering wheel signal buttons and transmit them to the IR sensor on the aftermarket HU. I have this setup with my Alpine deck. The buttons are not as responsive as they used to be, since you're dealing with IR instead of hardwired transmissions. Plus, the mute button doesn't work. But, volume still does, and I can still change songs on CDs/iPod with the arrows.
Putting something similar to scudrunners in in a couple weeks. Mt aftermarkwet HU has an attenuator function on the remote, so I will program the converter to make the mute button do that.

obviously, you do not want to visit a car stereo shop. yes, also, if you get an alpine deck (certain models) there is an interface that will plug directly into the back of the deck.

Car stereo shop installed mine when I asked them to, while they were doing the deck/trunk install for me.

In that case, not right this minute. My camera and car are in Florida and I'm not. I can describe how it was done. The stock HU was relocated to right behind the pass thru, and wire was run from the HU to the wiring harness in the dash to retain the functionality of the A/C controls and LED. Using the faceplate from the stock HU, my installer fabbed a custom dash piece to house my Alpine Deck, EDFC controller, and the stock A/C controls. You can see a picture of the dash piece in my vBGarage.
