There's supposed to be a small amp in each door. Being bose, I'd put money on the thing being 1 ohm or something stupid.

I've only every been curious, the lot's going to go.

First let's start with the system basics.

1. The 9" woofer in the door is .5 ohms

2. It is powered by its own seperate class-d amp supplying aproximately 50 Watts RMS.

3. The crossover frequency between the 2" tweeter and the 9" woofer is 2KHz.

4. If you do a search you will find schematics I posted of the system in a different thread.

As far as the concept of putting 9" woofers in the doors, I think it is a great idea and I think they used quality woofers (the tweeters are a different story). A 9" woofer can output twice as much bass as a 6.5" woofer. Also with the speakers upfront it is one of the few factory system cars that the bass doesn't sound like it is coming from behind me.

The 9" woofer also appears to be mounted in a sealed enclosure in the front doors. The only way a 6.5" woofer is going to deliver more bass is if the woofer has very strong output and/or you reinforce the enclosure that is already there. (reinforcing the enclosure for the current 9" speaker would also improve things).

The bass of the Bose is some the most impressive I have heard for a system that doesn't have a dedicated subwoofer.

However, I do plan to add my own sub in the near future. At which time, I will probably use something smaller than the 9" that is already in the doors as a replacement. I am tempted to use Bose speaker but at .5 ohms, unless I can rewire it, it is essentially useless.

I personally think the 9" woofer is best part of what amounts to an O.K. premium audio system. The tweeters and some other aspects of the system design are not to my liking.

I agree with MrWiggles on the 9's offering better bass than most standard offerings - but I think the trade off is upper mid range clarifty and definition.

If someone intends to ugrade the Bose system, I'm expecting they intent to spend a reasonable amount of money. It's an all or nothing upgrade.. You may be content bolting on a couple of tweeters and throwing a sub in the boot - if that can satisfy you - I envy you. The Bose system is designed to work in concert with all of it's components - partial upgrades could produce very strange results.

Wasnt thinking of half-assing it but the 9"woofer seemed like a good place to start.
