Does anyone have access to schematic info for the RX-8?

In particular, I'm interested in the stereo wiring info for both standard and Bose verisons of the stereo. I'd like to estimate the difficulty of doing an upgrade - therefore I'm interested in
1) interfaces between the head unit and the car (Does it interface to the car's digital bus to get speed info to drive the bose system?)
2) head unit downstream to speakers. where are amps? Crossovers? if these are separate units what are the interfaces? Analog? line level? diferential signaling?

Any technically oriented folks out there that have scoped out the stereo system?

when u buy the car, it comes with a little booklet all about the audio system

I looked through my stuff and I don't have the little booklet. Is there a wiring schematic in it?

Nope - the little book is a "quick ref guide" - I ignored the prior post re the book as I am not looking for stereo instructions, but for schematics of the car (including the stereo system).

In a later section of the owners manual are the parts numbers for the shop manual and the wiring diagram. However, I am told they are not released yet - so I'm waiting for them to become available (2 dealers and a Mazda rep have told me that they are at Mazda but not released for sale yet).

I got the stereo schematic from the dealer. I had the tech print it up. I was looking for the schematic for the Navi to the DVD rom. But that wasn't in the schematic I got. I could email it to you when I get home. I'm at work right now and don't have it.

From this schematic, it looks like all this main amp is for, is for the rear speakers?? Is that what you guys are seeing?

Is there another amp that runs the subs/tweeters in the doors?

Seems like if you were going to add subs in the trunk that it would be best to tap into the wires going to the subs in the door for the best signal to your sub amp wouldn't it? Maybe not......I'm ignorant when it comes to this stuff.

I want to learn as much about this system and where everything is at because this system definitely needs an upgrade. I plan on making some changes to it soon.

Anybody had any experience in taking the door panels off yet without tearing something up?

Those schematics aren't complete. They clear show the signals going to the rear speakers but they don't clearly label the three sets of signals coming out of the top which I believe to be for the front speakers.

To my knowledge the main amp powers the rear speakers, the front center channel and provides signal/powers the woofers/tweeters in the front doors.

Since the crossovers are done at the speakers themselves, the main amp sends out a full-range signal to the front door speakers. The tweeter then hi-passes the signal and that signal itself powers the tweeter without any seperate amplification. In the case of the woofer, it has its own class-D amplifier that low-passes the signal and then amplfies it for the woofer.

So the main amp provides the signal and processing for all 7 speakers and is powering 5 of them. The two door woofers each have their-own seperate amplifiers.

FWIW, my estimate on total system power is 25W X 5 from the main amplifier and then 50 Watts from each woofer amplifier for a total of 225 Watts. That is my best guess

The technician told me that I can subscribe to a service that gives access to the full shop manual for about $200. I fully intend to do that - especially if the system lets me print pages.

I aggree that the rear amp should only be for the rears - it's very small to power the whole system. I REALLY want to find the clean line level outs from the head unit. I don't have any real problems with the basic radio/CD, I just want real speakers and real amps. I have visited a few high-end shops in my area and haven't found ayone even willing to look into it. They will only do the terrible hi-lo converter. BAD.

It's worth the $200 just for the stero project, not to mention all the other stuff I will do to this car, after all - it's a toy.

I saw audio specs somewhere that stated 100 Watts for base stereo and 300 Watts for the BOSE system

Is there anything to be learned in the schematics on how to add an AUX input to the head unit for MP3 players or other external devices?

If you can find a link to that 300 Watt claim, I would love to see it. Not that I really doubt 300 Watts (it very well could be) just that no one I know has seen a hard number for the Bose in terms of Watts. 300 Watts on a Bose system is pretty high. Bose usually likes to use the bare minimum.

Alas - the wattage questions won't tell you much as none of the references spec how wattage was measured.... without knowing if they mean "RMS", "Peak", "average", "continuous" or "instantainious" (for an instant and then the amp is slag) - the numbers have no meaning.

I suspect the ratings are "peak" or some such other useless scale - because if the system were 300W RMS I never would have been physically able to be present in the car at full volume...

Thanks for the link. That is new information. The old RX-8 Flash site didn't have the power listed for the Bose system.

BTW, I bet it is close to 300 Watts RMS. I doubt it is simply peak. There 100 Watt claim for the standard stereo is honest. I bet the Bose rating is fairly honest as well.
