Replaced interior lights with blue LEDs.

I've replaced all the interior lights in my RX8 with blue LED items. I've even done the puddle lights under the mirrors.

It looks really spooky when you unlock it in the dark.

RotorManiac 06-13-2004 05:26 PM

wow man, that's spooky indeed! it looks nice but i don't know if i'd doit to my car... have you considered another color?

SuPerHerO::tOnY 06-13-2004 05:28 PM

wow i like it a lot!! will the lights burn out? anyways if i do this i wouldnt have to add glow tubes near my seats and etc. although it would be a little weird. is it legal?

chinx 06-13-2004 05:29 PM

that looks cool. personally i'd use white LED's instead of blue, but that looks cool. where do you live? i don't think us spec cars have those puddle lights under the mirrow

Mikelikes2drive 06-13-2004 07:21 PM

does look scary :/ must attract alot of attention

driving stick with my left hand is too weird too imagine haha :D

dova 06-13-2004 08:59 PM

what type of light bulb you used?

and WHAT R DOES LIGHT UNDER THE MIRROWS?

RotorGeek 06-13-2004 09:19 PM

It looks cool. The light under the mirrors are options in Asia and europe

XDEEDUBBX 06-14-2004 12:38 AM

thats bright...in L.A. ...its a ticket waiting to happen...

Kel Rx8 06-14-2004 12:47 AM

would be a ticket here.
yrs ago my friend did all his interior light on his millenia
a cop pulled up to us in parking lot of a supermarket.
we had some chicks in the car minding our own business and maybe got there 2min before the cop came.
and said you guys think your in a submarine ?
license and registration.i must admit it was funny and the ticket he got.

Mag 06-14-2004 02:20 AM

The light under the mirrors are standard in Europe, and they give a pretty cool look when you unlock the doors at night

Mag 06-14-2004 02:23 AM

rilot,

Sorry I don't know a lot about LEDs, could you tell me (tell us ?), did you just replace the bulbs by LED or did you have to change the whole electric system ?
Thanks

rilot 06-14-2004 02:50 AM

There are direct replacements for the 501 type (not sure what they are called in the US) capless bulbs. The main centre light is a 36mm bar type bulb. I managed to find a blue LED replacement though.

I got them from www.ultraleds.co.uk

dcheng 06-14-2004 07:26 AM

that looks awesome...i wanted to change those exact light bulbs for my rx8....but i tried to remove the mirror cover and i wouldnt work...i took the screw at the bottom of the mirror out but it didnt come off...i didnt apply any pressure just incase i stuffed it.....

rilot...would u mind to tell me how u removed ur mirror cover....

thx

rilot 06-14-2004 07:28 AM

You don't need to remove the cover. It's dead simple actually.

Angle the mirror glass as far in towards the car as it will go using the switches.

Now, have a look down the gap on the outside of the mirror between the glass and the housing, you will see a rubber holder with 2 wires going to it. Get some long nose pliers and twist it to remove.

Easy.

dcheng 06-14-2004 07:29 AM

i forgot to add....what bulbs does the exterior mirrors use?

Razpewton 06-14-2004 07:32 AM

Looks sharp. May be my next mod. Thanks.

dcheng 06-14-2004 07:34 AM

thx rilot..

501 capless (not sure of their US designation). The same as the rest of the interior bulbs. Take one out of the door panel and have a look.

RAM 06-14-2004 08:15 AM

Maybe I am confused but what interior lights have been replaced? I am assuming you replaced the dome lights, the door lights and the map lights . . . are there any other interior lights to replace?

What would you get ticketed for?

rilot 06-14-2004 08:57 AM

Dome lights, door lights, map lights and also the puddle lights but you don't have those in the US.

I certainly won't get ticketed, there is no law in the UK that states the interior lights must be of a certain colour, anyway, they are only on when the car is stationary with the doors open.

Do you have laws in the US that restrict what colour lights can be used in the interior of a stationary car?

RAM 06-14-2004 09:02 AM

Not that I am aware . . . that is why I was asking those who indicated that they were or would be ticketed what they would be ticketed for. I can't imagine that the interior light color in a non-moving vehicle is restricted or that anyone would care enough to issue a ticket.

Astor 06-14-2004 11:38 AM

I did this a while back, I ordered the 4-led lights from autolumination.com
the US size is 194 for the doors & map lights, and I believe the dome light was 31mm, I tried a 36mm and it was too big.

It does look cool when you open the doors.

-Submarine- lmao

former_s2k'r 06-14-2004 11:41 AM

I just ordered hyper-white and red 194's from Auto Illumination on top of Silvania Silverstars (non-HID headlights). I think I'm gonna have the interior lights RED when you lock and unlock. Colored lights in your ride while you are driving is ghetto....

monte 06-14-2004 02:14 PM

Is it possible to put in red led's?

How much do they cost? How long did it take u to put them in? Where to get them?

Nemesis8 06-14-2004 05:15 PM

Where can I order the puddle lights? Do you need to replace the entire mirror set? They look cool.

\\Konig\\ 06-14-2004 05:35 PM

blue looks a bit odd with red, but it still looks cool anyways

XcelR8 06-14-2004 08:04 PM

I just ordered 4 pairs of 194 Xenon Clear Bulb from www.macewenmotorsports.com on sale for $4/pr. These are xenon filled and twice as brights as stock (with no yellowish tint). They will replace all the interior lights, the license plate light, the side marker lights and the front marker lights.

moogs 06-15-2004 03:21 AM

for some reason i just don't think that's legal here in the states. i dunno, looks neat tho!

savedsol 06-16-2004 09:15 AM

There's no reason it wouldn't be legal, as long as you didn't have them flashing while you are driving

blue flash 06-16-2004 09:45 AM

it only illegal in n. c . to drive with your interior lights on. so while your parked they cant do anything but laugh.

Astor 06-16-2004 11:30 AM

I don't drive with mine on, takes about 5 minutes, except the map lights, that part is tricky to get off.
The LED come in a variety of colors.

Prefect 06-16-2004 12:11 PM

Hi All!

I want to replace all (three?) interior and the two exterior mirror lights with blue ones. Which LEDs do i have to order? I want them as bright as possible! :-)

There are so many type 501 LED on www.ultraleds.co.uk i don't know which ones are the brightest and still fit!

I think autolumination.com is much cheaper but are the LEDs from there as good as the ones from ultraleds.co.uk?

Just in case: what white LEDs should i order for the back-numberplate?

Thanks! Chris

HK.RX888 06-17-2004 10:20 AM

dammit that's what i have...i thought i would be the first to post...shert.

draco067 06-18-2004 06:40 AM

Cool idea, but I'm not sure I like the color ... it contrasts a bit too strangely for my tastes.

jniamehr 06-20-2004 08:54 PM

What color is your interior rilot?

rilot 06-21-2004 01:45 AM

Black leather interior.

Mighty A-MAN 06-21-2004 01:33 PM

Hi Guys,

Well, I got all the LEDs, but actually I'm not sure how to replace the standard ones with the new ones.

I never took anything off of any car except the braking light of the RX-8 to install the stealth version of the RX-8 logo.

So, what tools do I need? Where do I have to press, screw or whatever to get the stuff off?

I appreciate any help!

Cheers,

Mighty A-MAN

rilot 06-21-2004 02:52 PM

It's all in the owners manual.

Mighty A-MAN 06-27-2004 04:51 AM

Hi rilot,

While I was too anxious in the first place (I just didn't want to break anything), I replaced most lamps a couple of days ago succesfully (except map lamps).

Thanks for your hint, I just found the page inside the manual discribing how to exchange the map lights.

Cheers,

Mighty A-MAN

dgrx8 02-24-2006 12:22 PM

Each state is different here in the US. Michigan isn't a problem, but some states just try to find ways to make money....

robbz23 02-28-2006 02:57 PM

I have replaced all interior lights, the driving lights, side marker, and the license plate lights with 194 or 2825 6 led white from www.superbrightleds.com about $3 each. They are not as bright as the standard bulbs, and have a slight bluish tint to them. In fact compared to Xenon (HID) headlights they look almost blue. I had to use the grind tool on my dremel to make the Map lights fit though, because they are a wider diameter then the stock bulb. Once you have the map light assembly out of the car, you can use a soft tipped tool to pop the clear lense off, then remove the reflector to grind it down. I think the 4 led's fit stock though. I will tell you that having someone with small hands helps a lot when doing the driving bulbs, and even then i lost 2 in the headlight assembly. which required removing the bumper, and assembly to shake them free.

i have no idea what you are talking about.

The 6leds 194 from SuperbrightLeds fit fine in the maplights. you shouldn't have to grind anything down. I know this because that's what i have in my car right now.

rotor_man 03-01-2006 09:20 PM

I changed out the door lights at the bottom of the interior panel to red, i used bulbs instead of led's because they fade when you unlock the car

LED's won't fade/dim when turning on or off? or am I mis-understanding the above?

I was looking at changing to Red LED's but if they don't slowly turn on or dim when turning off I think I would rather stick with the bulbs.

robbz23 03-06-2006 12:12 PM

NO they don't fade. They kind of blink once or twice when they would be normally fading on.

Hoosteen do you know which type you got from them? I noticed that they have about 3 diff 6 LED 194's. I can't remember which ones I got but they are much fatter then stock bulbs.

ac3mastuh 03-18-2006 11:55 AM

has anyone used the matrix setup from autolumination? I'm wondering if it'll fit in the old socket.

strayer2189 03-18-2006 12:45 PM

You wouldnt have a picture showing how it looks with the lights on the center console and speedo?

lesper4 03-18-2006 12:50 PM

car looks great man, there are only so many colqrs one can chage to still make the light usefull (blue, white, red) i think the rest would just be annoying. your puddle lights are pretty cool as well. wish we had that here in the states.

I am thinking of doing this to mine, but I don't want to deal with any cops...my 30% tint makes me nervous enough...(so far so good)
