You will not be able to get a nav system installed by the dealer. Your best bet now is aftermarket...

 

Aftermarket is better anyway!

Eclipse Avn5435 is a great Navi/Dvd/CD player.That's what I'm putting in my Rx8 right now.

 

The stock video system of the nav (the controls, and the screen) are far superior to the look of an aftermarket system...

All this talk about the stock system being a "$2000 boat anchor" is BS... its a great system.... The real BS is the way Mazda/Navteq are making it hard to keep it up to date, or give people firmware upgrades.

 

I concur. I wanted a tighly coupled and integrated navigation system. I had hoped for annual or at least bi-annual map udpates from either the dealer or Navtech/Navteq. The fact that the map data was already two years old when I purchased the car should have been a sign. Although I was lucky enough to receive the new firmware since the build date on my car was 12/03.

I was using a Garmin e-Trex Legend prior to purchasing my RX-8. Now I have a Garmin GPSMAP 196 to use instead. At least Garmin regularly releases updated MapSource products for their units. I'd even wager than a new CitySelect MapSource will cost less than our DVD IF we ever see it.

 

Go with a carputer.

I really like the look of the integrated system, but I suspect that maps for Australian cities are likely to be difficult, if not impossible, to get the system.. I also suspect that it might be too difficult to install in the Australian spec car as it is not offered, even as an option down here...
