Question Question about fitting subs....

Hey guys, I'm not to familiar with eletronics here, so please help me out.

I have a deal for a 600 watt Rockford amp, + 2 12'' subs. My brother told me it was a steal, so I'm going on his word to purchase sometime this week. My only concern is though, Will the subwoofers fit in the RX8 trunk?

All the info I got was 2 12'' subs and amp. No actual dimensions or anything.

Please help! thanks

I'm not sure of the air space requirement for the 2 subs but I can imagine you don't have enough room to build a box to make them sound that great and have any usable space left. I have an Xsite 12" sub and I believe it's supposed to have 2.3 cu/ft but only has 1.9. This was to retain some space. It still sounds great though, just not the dB range I wanted. Hope this helps.

i know im brand new to the site but i do think i have something to offer here....i used to install stereo equipment at a local shop and have worked on a few rx-8's.....the most success we have had is with using 10" subs in custom boxes we fabricated. u can definitely use the 12" sub but the previous post was right by telling you that one one is possible while still retaining any kind of sound quality. you have to consider that a larger sub is going to displace more air. to displace more air you have to have the larger box. that box needs to be the correct size or the sub will be too powerful for available space and sound horrible. if the box is too big then you have sloppy sound and greatly increase the risk of blowing your sub. a ported box takes up so much more airspace. in the rx-8's you will never get the sound possible in say a tahoe or similar vehicle. its all about the airspace. here is a final thing to think about. with one 12 in a ported box (you need ported to maximize sound since you only have one sub) you have 12 in. of area pushing air. with 2 10's you have 20 inches or 75% more area pushing the air. with the correct subs those two tens can even take up less space than the one ported 12. its all about the math and you want effeciency. 2 10's are simply more efficient that 1 or even 2 12's in an rx-8.

Again, a 12" sub doesnt always need a bigger box than a 10" one, but usually a 12" that requires a smaller box is more expensive.

Yeah, Understood. I am going to Bestbuy after school today, going to see. I had the deal of two subwoofers 12'' and amp for $300 w/o installation. So it was a nice deal. How ever, If it is to much of a headache I will go for one 12'' or 2 10''. Thanks again though, I do realize two 12'' will fit, but like you said it will require costs to go up.

And if they aren't good subs, it's just going to be noise... and if you get 2... a hell of a lot of noise at that.

You may want to go with 2 10" just because the airspace required is more appropriate for what you are looking for.

Yes, I understand, They are from a friend( I forgot to mention) who was getting married, he had them in BMW. So he gave me the deal, I rejected it. My cousin who got a new car, sold me his literally brand new one pioneer 12'' sub and amp for dirt cheap, 700 watts or something like that. I'm picking it up tomorrow I just hope it fits.It already has a box for it with good airspace, I just hope it fits in the trunk. I may have to remove the spare and the bar going across the trunk to fit if neccessary. Then I am taking it to a local car audio shop, charging me 80$/hr. Ridculous I know, that or best buy, but the local audio shop has lifetime warranty on installed subs and amps, not like best buy or anything else. But my MAIN MAIN MAIN concern is, will the sub fit with the box it has. Thanks for all your opionions, Ill post pics if it fits. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, Then I'll have pics up.

Unless it's an abnormally unusual size box, no it's not going to fit. I looked around before having one custom built and no one, at any store, be it online or in person, had a box that would fit the RX8. The trunk opening is just not big enough.

Ahh nuts. That really sucks man. I'll try it tomorrow but your probably right. To have a custom box built, the guy is charging 80$/hr. Thats a little too much since it takes 7 hours just for the box, I'll have to wait til' maybe next month when I can afford it. Thanks though RX8 ZOOM you helped out alot.

Yes it is high, But it is lifetime warranty on paper incase anything messes up, they will fix it for free. Ill continue shopping around and see who has the best deal for labor and set up.

2. $80/hr for the sub box only (for 7 hours) is STUPID. If their warranty only includes labor on the box and not the rest of the system install, its worthless. I would never pay that much for a custom box, but I would for a custom fiberglassed enclosure (like 4080's box..do a search if you want more info).

Frankly, if they want to charge you $560 to make a box, I think I would go elsewhere just on principle. Don't let them rip you off by offering a lifetime warranty on labor if its only labor on the box and not the full system. Do your research on this. If you just want a box that will fit our trunk opening, you can do better on price. Now if you wanted box that looked like 4080's, then I can see it costing more.

I see... Thanks a lot djesto you are probably right. 560$ for the box and labor is very high once I think about it, but I have been non-stop on the search trying to find where people got there boxes for a 12'' sub. Most are custom made so that doesn't help me any. So the sub and amp will just sit in my place til' I can find a box and a disent price for install. Thanks again
