Questings about adding a car comptuer.

I am not very car electronic literate and I dont mind paying to have one installed... I just have 2 questions if anyone can answer them.

One... What kind of shop would do a custom install? (just wiring mostly... I can install the computer once the wires are in place)

And, what kind of service garenty should I be looking for? I would hate to have my dash or... scratched. And im not sure if they would be responsible for it.

Anyway, just loooking for general guild lines as Im looking to do this before the Xdays. Im going on a long..... long, trip.

Thanks!

Not very many places would do such an install for you. If do you find a place, be prepared to pay $$$. I was quoted $500 just to make dash piece for my LCD.

well you could build one off of a car pc site like mp3car.com. and then buy the new JDM nav trey for like $350.

then have a place to install. just look around there for a place that can handle this sort of thing

Well honestly, Im conserned about breaking something more then figuring out all the wires. I can handle 50 wires, but im prone to putting to much strength into things which cause them to break. Once the plastic is out of the way im almost good to go.

And you mentioned a nav tray. What was the reason that the Sat radio was incompatible with the Nav system?

Its odd that that part is so expencive...being plactic and all. Anyway... How does it integrate into the dash? Since my dash seems to be once peice, do you cut out a slot?

The way I see it, it's a pretty good price for something so custom, hell I handpicked my 8 with a NAV system just so I could take it out and put a computer in its place. That's a $2000 optional item right there and I've seen people selling it on ebay (used) for about $1000...

Just buy a <a href="http://www.dynamism.com/vega/main.shtml">Vega</a> and call it done.

And you could build a PC twice that powerful and with a 7" screen for $300 less than that cost....

I'm in the same boat. I've got all my stuff more or less together (minus the stereo integration) and am just trying to figure out the right route to go installing it. The JDM tray is a great solution, I'm just not a big fan of the way it looks when it's closed. I think I'll hold off until I find a solution to place the screen where the stock radio is....

i'll have to look for it again, but i remember seeing something you could buy that replaced the black piano finish part of your dash with a double din plastic piece to match the rest of the dash... it was priced outrageous... but it's an option for replacing your stock HU

Um, not that is one portable unit. I think I am going to make a docking station in the dash for it and pop it in and out of my car.

No, that's true. If you want to take it out of the car, that's a good solution, I'm just saying that a Via Epia based computer with a 7" Lilliput or Xenarc screen is only going to run you $500 or so if you shop wisely....
