problem with mp3 playing head unit

Hello all,

Just picked up my car last week and am loving it. I'm getting ready for a trip and just tried to play some mp3's in the head unit, but there's no audio and I cannot advance tracks (only shows track 1). Am I missing something? Nothing in the user manual addresses this, and the dealer said it plays mp3's. I'm about 40 minutes away, otherwise I would just take it in and have them look at it.

It's an 05, not sure of the build date, but it is the base cd head unit with the sat button on it.

Well, I was told by the salesman it played MP3's. By option, do you mean completely different head unit?

There are 3 distinct units (the top half) for the rx-8; the single disk CD-Player, the single Disk CD/MP3 player, and the 6-disk CD player. The bottom (lower half) bay can accommodate the oem tape or mini-disk player.

If it's just recognizing a single track then the salesperson lied...it's not an MP3 capable player.

What happens is that it sees a single data track and assumes, incorrectly, that its music. Then can't interpret the musical information because it is, in fact, data.

The MP3 player would correctly interpret that single data track as data and process it into the MP3s as it should.

Buy the MP3 player upgrade and either have Mazda install it or DIY. I'm sure a number of forum vendors carry it...look around.
