Question Is it possible to replace the GPS with newer / better unit?

I was wondering whether it was possible to replace the OEM Panasonic CN-DV 2300 GPS unit that is normally installed in the RX-8 with a newer model made by Panasonic. The idea is that a newer model will have better functionality and performance but possibly keep compatibility with the controls, connections, etc. Am I dreaming, or is it possible?

Your dreaming if you think the unit is a CN-DV2300, What newer model is on the market? I think it would be hard to find a unit with a "speed" signal that would match, giving a degrade in accuracy. Maybe im wrong.

I guess what I was asking is whether there is a new and better revision of the GPS unit installed on the RX8. Newer models may support functionality such as voice control or better menu navigation/functionality... and being made by the same manufacturer, it could remain compatible in terms of connections so as to make it a drop in replacement.

The only way to find out is to pull the unit out of a Mazda 5 and plug it in to an RX-8. I know the controls on the Mazda 5 are very close to the RX8... but im not even sure the new unit is a Panasonic.
