Alright - I am no techy by any definition, no mechanic, and would greatly appreciate some simple advice regarding adding a subwoofer to my rx-8. The one thing I am is a bit of a music snob and just know what sounds good and what doesn't.

The perpetual lack of deep bass in the stereo is basically my one qualm with this otherwise amazing car. My mother's '04 Honda Accord has a better system than my 8 with GT package and Bose. I listen to a lot of techno and rap and my Bose just isn't doing it for me, and has been way under my expectations. You would think that when you spend $30k+ on a car...

Can anybody out there offer a simple, or semi-simple subwoofer option? I know I would need an amp as well. From everythign I read on Bose they do not recommend adding a subwoofer to their systems. Geez I hate that com[pany.

I know JL Audio makes a nice custom box for the 350Z, and wondering if they have one for the RX-8. Their website does not indicate so.

If anyone has ideas for me please help. and if you could also tell me how much this will cost me I'd appreciate that too.

Bose systems run on 3ohm where as most aftermarket systems run on 4ohm. Thats why they dont recommend adding a subwoofer. But you can buy one of THEIRS..which is utter garbage. If you are as big of an audiophile as you say you are, then your only option would be to change out the entire system. Good luck.

 

1. just dynamat your trunk and doors and maybe you'll be satisfied. It made a big difference for me. -- cost ~ $140 diy, maybe $250 professionally installed

2.using the speaker level inputs on an add-on amp + subwoofer/enclosure, using an ACC power source for the amp turn on line to avoid bass feedback (I dunno the cost, you'll need wire, fuses, enclosure, speaker, amp, research the forum for diy's, anywhere from $250-800 depends on the components)

3. replace the Head unit and add amps and speakers: best sound but you lose the cool dash display capabilities and maybe the steering wheel controls ! ($2000+ I sould say)

you just tap the rear amp (in the trunk) for a signal and power it idependently...it isn't amzing but makes a hell of a difference (I'm going to wait and install a passthrough sub or subs)

 

There is no custom box readily available for the RX-8.
You can do what Unser suggested in his #2 point. Tap into the rear speaker wires and you should be fine.

 

For what its worth, I'm running an Infinity Basslink and I'm quite frankly amazed at the quality and output, considering what it is (a self-contained powered sub in a relatively tiny enclosure). I'm using it in conjunction with the stock base stereo plus upgraded front and rear speakers, and I have to keep it turned way down so as to not overmatch the stock power....I'm sure I will end up getting a 4-channel amp to power the main speakers for this reason alone.

I do not know what the ramifications are of doing something like this with the Bose, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

I got an Infinity Basslink for $200.00 installed it myself, used velcro to hold it down, had a car stereo shop turn my trunk pass thru to a speaker cover for $45.00. (they cut out the back drilled it full of 1 inch holes and covered it in black cloth, it looks stock) Amazing difference, highly recomend, turn up the trb a few notches leave bass at even. Everyone who rides in my car is wowwed by the stereo now. Too bad I got the Racing Beat exhaust, cause now I keep hitting the "mute" to hear that other sweet sound.

The Basslink is a 10" and it has an integrated 200W amp if I remember correctly.

I went to Tweeter this weekend and asked them about the sub install for my Bose - they said it is certainly possible, and I all need is some sort of "adapter" for the HU that will allow another amp to separately power the sub. Can anyone verify/debunk this?

Also, I want a 12" but there don't seem to be any boxes that would fit in the trunk, so the only option is a custom box which would run around $500. I can't over $1k on a sub, that would be absurd. are there any 12" boxes that would fit our trunks?
