my car smells like paint...

...on the inside. But ive never had paint (not even nail polish) in there...and it only happens when my system is turned way up. Do u guys think it could be somethin to do with the system? I really need to get it fixed or something cause it gives me a huge headache every single time. Anyone know what it could be?

How up is way up?

Its probably something burining.

Sparking creates ozone, which could possibly be mistaken by some people as "paint," if your not used to it, it can give you shortness of breath and a irritated tight feeling throat. Not to mention giving a headache/lightheadedness.

It's from the materials used for the box, they give off odor when flexed by the sub(s). Especially if they used fiberglass resin to coat the inside of the box, or to create the face of the box. There is nothing they can do about it, it will lessen over time but it will always be there, more when it's hot outside.

Check the components and wiring when this is happening. It could be from something getting too hot under load.

maybe just the materials like someone mentioned
3 weeks after finishing my trunk it still smells like mdf & paint.
nice weather this week allowed me to leave the car outside with the trunk open all day
so far its all okay.use to get a good smell when turned up,im assuming from all that air moving around from the subs

After I get my car repaired at the body shop ('98 323i) it would smell like paint for weeks on end. The way I got rid of the smell was like this.

Take a couple of Snuggle sheets or any brand sheet-type laundry fabric softener and place one under each seat in the car. Also place one in the trunk and anywhere in the cabin where heat accumulates. The heat will allow the fabric softener to begin absorbing the odor. And, after a few weeks, you'll notice the odor significantly reduced, if not eliminated.

Coop' 04 Hit it right on the dot. If they used fiberglass which they probably did then it is goin to have a slight odor for about a week or 2. Did they paint your box or is it carpeted or vinal? ( please excuse my spelling its horrible ).

I can tell you this. If the smell is caused from burning paint due to sparking you have a law suit on your hands because it is a requirement for them to put fuses between power sources. This can burn your car to the ground if something were to go wrong.

Also please tell me what amps your using some amps are really bad about getting hot. The PPI amps are horrible for this and I would not reccomend them to anyone.

Park your car outside until you get the odor completley gone. The heat from the sun will help speed up the process some.

I'm still about the sparking ozone thing, probably overloading the amp because of bad grounding At least that would be my first thought. Try letting your car sit overnight, then in the morning go up close and smell it. If it doesnt smell, then its probably the wiring, if it still smells then its the materials used.

and btw my amps are Zapco (someone asked what brand). Im gonna try the sunggle sheet things later today, I just have to go to the store first...and I would park my car outside, but my civic, my moms car, and my dads truck, AND our house (and other neighboring cars and houses) have all been egged this week...and i dont want any of that on my 8.

I posted some pics of the system so maybe u guys can see if its paint or w/e lol. The pic in the middle is what it looks like now. The other 2 were stage 1.

Thats definatly carpet. Wow they used a ton of space. Looks like your definatly smelling Fiberglass solution. That stuff will take a week or so to ventilate out. Nice looking tho. Im gonna be building a custom one for 4 12"s and one for 3 10"s. Im still not sure about 4 12"s yet. Gonna put em up on the market if anyone is interested.
