MP3 player redux

Some of you may recall that I had a problem with the MP3 player that I bought and installed - it would not display any directory / album / title / artist information, simply showing "NO TITLE" for everything.

Well, I got a call from the dealership this week, to say that Mazda had finally shipped a replacement unit. When I got down there, I found that what they'd shipped was a replacement head unit rather than the MP3 drive itself.

Sure enough, after I swapped out it out - retaining my MP3 drive - it now displays the tag information perfectly. So the problem all along was in the OEM head unit that came with the car, not the accessory MP3 player.

Was the MP3 unit put on as an aftermarket part, or did you order it w/ the car? If they won't give you your money back for it when you return the car, let me know...

I bought both the MP3 player and the aldehyde filter as accessories from the dealer, and installed them myself. The buyback folks have told me that they will include them in the repurchase price, but I'll be sure to let you know if that doesn't pan out.

The drive itself doesn't come with instructions because it's common to multiple Mazda models (and possibly non-Mazdas, too). You get the instructions with the front trim panel, for which you have to pay an exorbitant amount over and above the cost of the drive. Since someone had already scanned and posted the instructions, I figured I could live without the little "mp3" logo that the trim panel would have provided.

Installation wasn't too bad once I finally located one particular bolt, and cut the tape that was preventing me from pulling the uinit out far enough to unplug the connectors. See this thread for the scanned instructions and photos.
