Metra kit update (need cable? look here)
OK I'm finally ready to send out the cable to those who need it. Sorry for the delay, I needed the cable for a friend.
Post in this thread if you need the cable, I will keep track of who has the cable and who to send it to next. I will pay for the first shipment, then the 2nd guy will pay for the shipment to the 3rd guy. The cheapest form of shipment allowed is USPS parcel post with delivery confirmation. Once you get the cable, please update your firmware as soon as possible. The current version of the firmware is 1.4 This firmware should solve all display glitches, freezes, and timekeeping issues. Update instructions: 1) Download and install the WebXXpress Updater here: http://www.axxessinterface.com/fw_downloads.aspx 2) Run the WebXXpress Updater (Programs > Metra Electronics > WebXXpress Updater) 3) Connect the cable to USB port. (DO NOT CONNECT TO AXXESS BOX YET) 4) Run the USB Bootloader (Programs > USB BootLoader) 5) Click "Update Unit Board" 6) NOW Connect the other end of cable to your AXXESS BOX when the program says so. Make sure you push the cable into the riser firmly and in one fell swoop. Also take note of the orientation. Do not reverse orientation. 7) When completed, unplug the cable and reassemble the box. Take note of the orientation and spacers. Note: You may want to try plugging the cable into the board a couple times without connecting the other end to the computer for practice. FAQ: Where do I plug the cable into? Open up the AXXESS BOX and there is a 4 pin header in the center of the circuit board. That is the port you will use. Make sure to not short the circuit. Be aware of static electricity. Be aware of the orientation of the connector. [UPDATE JUNE 1ST 2011] I have sold my RX-8 roughly two years ago! I now drive a completely different car and am not active much on this forum. (Although I still do try to answer PMs) I DO NOT know where the cable is! I no longer have authority over it. If you guys can crowd source it, excellent! Thank You! |
Cable currently at: ???
Sending to: Read the thread and try to figure out where the cable might be.. It's like an easter egg hunt! Queue 1) krijpipudht (Nor-Cal) 2) lopezian2004 (TX) 3) Carbon (Portland OR) 3.5) kijpipudht (Nor-Cal) 4) RotaryResurrection (East TN) 5) bmak (Boston) 6) raphy3 (Maryland) 7) ZumnRx8 (SoCal) 8) qzeek 9) rodjohnathan 10) The reverend 11) snowtexan |
Interested, but I'm in Nor-Cal SF Bay area.
Will the cable come up here? |
The cable will be mailed out. Basically I will pay for the first shipment to you. Then you pay for shipment to the next guy, etc.
Basically you PM me your address, I'll ship to you. The next guy will PM me his address, I will PM that address to you, then you ship it to him. |
I have an idea.
Instead of keep mailing it up and down CA. Let's check if any anyone in SF Bay Area also need the cable? Once Bay Area is done, the cable can travel somewhere else. |
Yes I will try to group locals together.
|
I need the cable, but I'm in South Florida. And I'm not sure my Axxess box is actually working...so put me at the end of the queue for now.
|
Did anybody on here recently buy a bootloader off eBay? LOL!!!
|
OK I'll be shipping the cable towards the end of next week.
|
I need it! DFW TX
|
Question: will new Metra kits ship with this firmware or would we still need to do this upgrade?
|
I would like to use the cable as well. I am in Portland Oregon.

Put me on the list. (east TN)
|
Can you add me to the list (Boston)? Thanks,
|
I guess I might as well add myself to the list, so I can finally get rid of my intermittent matrix display. I hope it fixes that and doesn't surprise me with anything else. (crossing fingers)
|
Imma send out my buddy's cable. Whose next in line? Carbon? PM me your address and ill ship it out. Reply soon so i can send it out this week.
|
If you do decide to send out your own cable, either create your own thread or make sure you tell me who in the current list you are sending to. That way the same guy doesn't get the cable twice.

Cable? UK? Help!
Hey gents.
I have been looking for this cable for a while. Was wondering what the status is for passing this thing around. Only issue is... im in UK. Im a Police Officer, so i wont steal it! You will get it back, just wondering if any kind American is willing to send it over here? - To a fellow (british) Rx8 Owner! Thanks Tom. |
D:
Maybe when we're all done here in the US. How did you get it to work on an Euro spec car anyways? Don't you guys have that auto climate control? |
Hey, yeah it is auto climate. Its a Jap import though. Im having issues with the A/C, but hoping that the 1.4 update will fix that...
Im being hopefull. |
Hmm.. which problems in particular?
|
Just received the cable and updated today.
Looks like Carbon is next, so if you would PM me your name and address that would be awesome. Thanks rollerbldes for doing this! |
Good to hear!
To keep it organized I will direct all the PMs. Eg. I PM next guy, then PM you. This way I keep track of exactly who has it and where. |
I have warm air blowing. Have the described issues with the Air Con.
Would rather try using the cable instead of buying it for the silly price it is on offer for. If it still doesnt work I will return the car to standard and the next guy gets the cable. |

So how do I get on the list? i bought my metra kit from a previous owner flat black- now getting painted WB, its the first type of metra kit....but i dont know if the previous owner updated the version....of the axxess or whatever...u know? Thanks anyone?
|
ok now I finally today got the LED problem after all this time. AC and everything works, everything works as before, just now the LEDs on the AC controls don't change to indicate what my settings are, and the temperature display is frozen at what it was last night. This sounds like the original problem everyone was having when they first got the kit. Dunno why it took so long for it to show up with me.
Just want to make sure I am still on the list and see where the cable is at now. Peace all. |
can i get on the list and where is the list at now? whos up>?
|
I'll add you guys. I havn't herd from Carbon yet.. he should have the cable by now...
raphy3: you're still on the list You guys can check the status of where the cable is, list, etc on the second post of this thread. |
rollerbldes
Please put me back on the list. Thanks! |
I got the cable the other day and I'll have time to complete the update this weekend. Send me the next address and I'll have it in the mail on Monday.
Carbon |
OK Great I'll send it your way as soon as I get it. Thanks Carbon.
[Edit] Check your PM |
The cable is in the mail headed to Hayward, CA.
The update went without any problems. Only difficult part was actually getting to the box... |
I thought I was next?

Also, the cable was in Oregon and kijpipudht is in California. If I didn't do it this way it would have to go to the east coast then back to the west coast. --- I am in the process of moving right now but I will still maintain the list. If you have a question about the update process I may be a bit slow in responding. |
Okay guys, I have a problem. I have the cable and the box out of the car ready to do the update, but I can't get the damned software to cooperate.
I downloaded the webxpress updater and installed it. It made me restart my system. Once it restarted and I tried to run the program, it "found a newer version of the program" and updated itself. I ran the program, which then created the bootloader program. I connected the USB cable, was prompted for 2 drivers, both of which I installed from the "XP drivers" folder in the USB bootloader program files folder. Now comes the issue. The instructions say to activate the USB Bootloader program by going to start, all programs, usb bootloader. When I do this, the system says that it is searching for usbbootloader.exe. It then says the shortcut has been changed or moved, and I cannot go any further. I looked in the program folder for USBbootloader and there is NO .exe file inside. I originally tried this procedure on my laptop. When it failed to work, I brought the board inside with me and used my PC, which produced identical results. Seems like I must be getting an incomplete download file or something? |
Yeah.. try running the webxxpress updater again. The bootloader should be in C:\Program Files\USB Bootloader\USBBootLoader.exe
If you still can't find it I can zip my USB Bootloader folder and send it over. You'll just have to unzip the folder and run the exe file inside. I'm not sure if this will work though, so try looking first. |
I've done the download 3 times on each computer, and I get the identical file each time. I just have no executable. If you can attatch it here that might be helpful for others in the future, otherwise you can email to kevin@rotaryresurrection.com
thanks |
I can't attach it as it is too large. Here is the link to download it.
http://ggforlife.com/files/USB%20Bootloader.zip Looks like they pushed out a new update for something. (Not for us) That could have messed with the folders. =/ |
Thanks for the upload. I was able to use it to get the update done.
I think what I am going to do is put the install files onto a CD and include with the cable for future users, since I cannot for the life of me get the download from the site that includes the necessary file. I tried on a third computer and still did not have the file, before using the one you provided. Also, assuming everything works normally for me when I put the board back into the car (here in about an hour) then I will be ready to ship the cable to the next person. Please PM me with the info. |
That's not a bad idea. Good to hear everything works.
I'll leave the link up in case anyone needs to download it again. |
cable is on it's way to Bahston...
|
excellent I'm up after that. I downloaded the zip file that roller put on here, but including the CD is a great idea RR.
BTW, I'll be moving to Knoxville at the end of the summer :D |
raphy3, you better send me your address quick!
|
Ok I have the cable. Got it in the mailbox today. My car is at the dealership getting the "fishbowl tail light" problem fixed. It was supposed to be done today, but the guy called me and said mazda apparently changed their bulletin. Used to you only had to change a rubber seal or something, and now they have to also change some kind of padding, which he said they needed to ship overnight to the dealer. So they say my car will be done by noon tomorrow. So I won't be able to do the update and send the cable on till tomorrow. Sorry for the extra day.

update complete
PM sent!
I just finished the update. There was one hitch: When I ran the bootloader and then connected the box it said "updating from version 1.0 to version 1.4", then it did nothing for a while, and finally said, "block communication failure", and that was it. No hints or help. So I figured the next thing to try would be force the update. So I checked the box and this time the bootloader uploaded the firmware to the axxess box. Last to double check things I ran the bootloader again and plugged in the box. It said, "version 1.4 newest firmware already installed, canceling download." So it looks like it worked despite the initial snag and did install 1.4. I put it back in the car and everything seemed to be working fine. Let me cross my fingers for no more entering the Matrix! Also I'm happy about how easy this was. Didn't have tear down everything or even take out my HU. The box was just right inside the dash underneath it. The only thing I had to do was pull out the metra faceplate and unplug the plugs from the axxess box. I didn't even have to unplug the Fan/AC/Temp comtrols from the metra faceplate, which can be a bit of a pain when switching out the HU. So that was pretty sweet; took like 15 minutes the whole thing! Thanks to roller for sending this around. cheers |
The cable is in the mail as of yesterday to the next guy. Hopefully will be there by tomorrow, then.
|
Great to hear. If Zumn is the last one, I can just get the cable back from him locally. Glad everyone found this useful.
If anyone else needs the cable let me know. |
