Exclamation MAJOR Problem experienced with NAV firmware upgrade!!

Has anyone else experienced the MAJOR problem after updating the NAV firmware where the screen goes black and says Accessing Map Data then just resets to the Map and doesn't route you anywhere?

I contacted MAZDA USA and Navteq and they are both telling me that when you update your firmware you MUST purchase the new Navigation disc in order for the system to work properly. Mazda neglected to inform me of this important info so now my Nav is F*#ked.

I reported them to the better business bureau since they are not willing to take care of their consumers properly after they have made an error. Let this serve as your warning.

Well, the update comes with the new map disc when you buy it - unless you downloaded it from the forum. The new software is for the new maps.

It's hardly their fault - I'm sure if you got the update from a Mazda dealer or Navteq, they'd have told you about this. Downloading the software without it's instructions from an unofficial place is just asking for trouble.

You probably neglected to inform them you downloaded the update from a website not associated with either of them?

I did get the disc from MAZDA. I called them and requested the disc after I experienced problems with the download process. They NEVER told me I needed a new map disc and I even tried my 2004-1 disc from my Mazda3 and it is still hosed.

Again I did NOT download this update! I had problems trying to do that so I called Mazda USA and asked if they knew about an upgrade disc for my 2004 RX-8 and they said absolutely we'll send it in the mail. I received it last week, installed it,and now the system does not work. No one on the phone or in any documentation I received with the disc did it say that I needed to purchase a new map disc.

Facts:
1. Mazda NA did send a firmware update disk to all nav owners--even those who still had their original map disks.
2. I used the web download to update my firmware. I am still using the original map disk that came with the car (in '03) without any problems.
3. The Mazda rep you spoke to regarding this issue is incorrect.

I wish that was true for me. I spoke to 3 Mazda reps including a supervisor and they all said the same thing as well as another person at Navteq.

For the non-believers you will see the attached pictures of the disc I received from Mazda.

I just boght the new Nav update disc from NavTech. I just put the disk in the slot and my mapping was good to go. Do I need to update some firmware as well? If so, how do I pull it off the new disk? The new disk came with very little instructions.

Thanks.

The firmware comes from Mazda/Panasonic you have to request it from Mazda USA if you did not receive it. Very cool new functions compared to the old firmware such as split screen directions when approaching a exit on the Highway and keyboard type input instead of that dumb scroll function. Too bad mine is F'd though. At least my Mazda 3 Nav works. LOL

I'm probably good to go then as I do get a split screen when I'm nearing the next scheduled turn.

My '8 has a build date of 04/2005. The new firmware was probably already loaded onto it.

My problem only happens when trying to type in an address not when using the POI data. For some reason the address input option causes the black screen and then won't give me routing data.

RIGHT NOW I REALLY MISS MY ACCORD. The NAV system in there was so far superior that it isn't even funny. In fact so is the NAV in my Lexus. Maybe I sould just rip out the screen in the RX-8 and the DVD player as well and replace it with a touchscreen and a carputer with Nav.

I never received a firmware update disk and I have a nav system in my 8. I have my original map disks too. Who do I contact to get the firmware update?

i can tell you with absolute certainty that the firmware update on an RX-8 will work with the original map disc provided with the 8. I did mine a few weeks ago and it works fine. What it sounds like is that you got a bad firmware disk or something is wrong with the disk drive. Try and re-install the firmware again and try to clean your disc, maybe it got a finger print or dirt on it while it was out.

If that doesn't work take it to your dealership with the update disc and see what they can do. You might also PM MazdaRadioDoc (I believe that is right), he will know the most of anybody here.

re-install may?? work BUT the system would need to be set back using "forced change" in the secret menu section. This would take the system back to black screen "application not loaded" But if the disc being used has bad data then the result will be the same.

Thanks jtdwad for the vote of confidence

I'm with jtdwab on this. I updated my NAV firmware without a new maps disc and everything is working as it should. Try to re-install it. Sounds to me like your disc might be what is broken.

Thanks for the info guys. This is exactly why these forums are so great! People here have more knowledge about their cars than Mazda USA does. You are all very helpful and I truly appreciate it.

I had my NAV and Headunit firmware both upgraded many months ago by rx8garage. When I finally received the NAV upgrade CD it gave me an error that I believe meant I could not upgrade because I was already at that version. My original Navteq maps worked just fine so I concur with those saying that the new firmware does not require new maps... it actually is the other way around... the new maps require the new firmware. I now have the new maps after dropping $150 to Navteq for something I should have received free or for much less but this topic belongs to another thread on this forum...

UPDATE: My local Mazda dealer is replacing my entire DVD unit rather than argue with Mazda USA anymore. It will have the most current firmware already installed.

Where did you get your updated NAV firmware?
