Probably somebody can do a DIY on this??? I'm interested. Parked in my garage the overhead lights don't quite go right over the hood. I can hook-up an extension light but for a quick oil check a hood light can come real handy.

Oil Injection
I plan on installing a light, more than likely an LED, im gonna make it so it shines on the side around the oil dipstick, so it makes it easyer to check the oil in low light....like at night at a gas station it cna be hard to see where to put the dipstick. I want to tie it into the same circut so when the doors are open it triggers the light. Radio shack sells the 12v BRIGHT white leds, should work good.
You can easily run the 2 wires for it thru a gomet in the firewall, and hid the wires under the insulated pad in the engine bay....and since my light would be on the 'cold' side of the motor, it would be protected and hidden well....
I am gonna tackle that this weekend. Ill post back!

I've been thinking about this for a while, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Well, I've got some underhood lighting. There's one light in the airbox, and two under the plexiglassed engine cover. There is also a flood light mounted up in the hood that sheds light onto the entire engine bay.
Also, not a vented hood, but I have some pics of the lights that shine through the grilles.

DIY Dipstick light
I just finished installing my dipstick light.
1 minute install.
Push button switch is the chrome piece opposite of the bulb.
Funny thing is I was going to rig up a switch in side and run wires to a couple of satellite LEDs had them picked out and spent like 15 minutes trying to choose a switch and then decided to get the 3 LED instead of 2. Buried next to them was this wireless LED with a clip on one end and a push button switch on the back.
Brighter than I had expected too.

Did anybody ever finish this? I want to light up the engine bay, mostly around the dipstick tube, but enough light to see everything else too. I want it to work off a plunger switch, so when you pop the hood, the light comes on. I will have some time over the holidays to do this, but I don't need to re-invent the wheel. Any thoughts?

Just dawned on me, perfect for undercar lighting.
Seriously though the LED clip on light has been great, very bright, and hasn't moved off a bit even with very spirited driving. $5 at Target, in Red gift box.
Quick install, lightweight.
Nice thing is it can be moved and adjusted where you want to see. I leave the corded shop light on the bench now. Grab the clip light work under the dash is easy, no flourescent light headache either if working for hours.
