Laythor's new sound

After spending a week having my front speakers go in and out I decided to do something about it.
Awhile ago I had a Pioneer avic d3x installed with the harness to mate it with the stick Bose speakers. At some point that harness was starting to let the connection for the front speakers come loose and when i'd hit a bump in the road I'd either have all my front speaker sound go bye-bye or, if they were already silent, come back.
This was getting annoying as hell so after searching around and reading reviews I found a local place in San Jose called Audio Design.
After talking to the sales guy, Anthony, for a few minutes I also started to think about the lack of bass. I asked him how much it would be for a sub woofer, amp, and custom enclosure. When he came back with a price I couldnt say yes fast enough.

Here's the result:

It's an alpine type R woofer with an alpine monoblock amp tucked under the passenger seat.

It sounds great. Takes all the bass out of the stock speakers and puts it into the sub. Can crank the volume up to the point it hurts my ears with zero distortion.
I kind of kick myself for not getting it done sooner.

update:

Just replaced the front speakers and tweeters with alpine type r's. Was having an issue with the corksport pre-bose component... i would go over a bump and my front speakers would cut out. Go over another and my right or left side would come back. After a week or so of this i had enough.

Have to say the new speakers are just great. The sounds is cleaner, might have something to do with my installer actually taking a ton of time to calibrate the whole thing. He has a mic looking device on a little tripod and some box connected to it... i dunno, not really an audio guy but seems to have taken everything to the next level.

That is EXACTLY what it was. I used to do the same thing for home theaters.

ZumnRx8 08-17-2010 12:12 AM

pics are your friend (crappy cell phone pics temporarily accepted)

ZumnRx8 08-17-2010 12:13 AM

BTW- the Mic look device connect to a tripod to a box might be a CAMERA.... many Mechanics use those, :dunno:

laythor 08-17-2010 12:14 AM

as much as i would love to take a door panel off to take pics.. i think i'll just wait till i'm at the next socal dyno day and let you hear them

and yeah, i assumed the calibration would have made a huge difference even with the stock speakers... but these are new and shiny

No wonder I haven't seen it before. :p

Does the enclosure butt right up against the wheel well? Looks like there's some space at the top. How is it held in place?

laythor 01-11-2011 12:27 PM

it fits right up against the wheel well. it's held in place by friction. I wanted to be able to quickly remove it if the need came up, and it has from time to time.

The "gap" is actually a shadow, the fitment is spot on and has zero gaps. I was very impressed by the workmanship this shop did... might be why i've been back to have all my stock speakers replaced.... :)

that box you're looking at is called an RTA (real time analyzer). They're probably dealers for Audio-Control components. It's nice, BUT.... from what the screen is saying... this pic was pre-calibration. ideally, when 'pinking' a car, the difference between freq ranges shouldn't be more than 3dB (twice the volume). That was really nice of them to calibrate it, as that service usually runs a couple hundred bucks.

Back in the days, before I put my fingers in bullet-holes 10,000 miles from home, I worked in the car audio industry.
