I'm going to buy the metra 6 kit and test it.
I've seen quite a few threads on people waiting for the Metra mazda 6 or rx-8 kit to come out, but I can't find any threads where someone has actually bought it.
Unless someone's already tried it and it doesn't work, I'm going to buy one and give it a try. I plan on dumping the head unit and installing a 7-8" touchscreen and carputer.
I really miss my install from my old car. http://www.arbybean.com/carmp3.php

Got the metra kit today. Initial prognosis: Doesn't look good, but there's hope.
Definitely not plug and play, the connectors are completely different. If I get ahold of a mazda 6 wiring diagram, I might be able to poke around and match everthing up. Looks like the same number of wires. Going to be lots of soldering involved.

No, not at all.
I was planning on fabricating my own faceplate, anyway. I was hoping I could just use the electronics from the metra kit since the 8 has the same base stereo unit as the 6.

From what I have been told the 8 head unit swap is extremely difficult. The actual head unit needs to be relocated to the trunk because the AC/Heater controls run off of that. It is something like 54 wires that need to be lengthened and sent into the trunk with the Headu Unit. My car audio guy hooks me up with GREAT deals all the time and he has done one of these once before, but he refuses to even try doing this again. It took over a week to get it to all work properly and the install charge was VERY high. I would recommend searching for info on this I have see other threads justifying exactly what I am saying here on the forum.
Good Luck! Keep us posted!
