I CAN VOUCH, 2005 key works in 2004 cars
5 Attachment(s)
THIS CONFIRMS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had read a couple of posts of success stories with the 2005 key on the 2004 car but MANY more posts of failures...and the failures were by reputable sources, even dealerships couldn't get it to work! But I still hoped that those few posters had indeed found a way...so I took a gamble and had Thew at www.rx8garage.net sell one to me...I told him worst case scenario, if it doesn't work I have a sweet transmitter FOB :) I got the key and in mail and brought it to the dealer to get CUT NOT CODED THERE (coding at a dealership was $80 at my dealership) well the guy in the parts department cut the key for me...guess how much it cost???? NOTHING! they cut it for free hahaha (they only needed my original key and the some verification I own the car) and on the first try programming the cut key blank's chip it worked!!!!!!!! no problems...just like the instructions said, and just so you know I have a May 2003 build date (I think on the second boat) so the 'theory' that it doesn't work on older builds is FALSE! insert first key, turn to on position, wait until security light goes out, then turn to lock position and remove key insert second key, turn to on position, wait until security light goes out, then turn to lock position and remove key insert NEW key, turn to on position, wait until security light goes out, then turn to lock position and remove key Then reinsert the key and your done!!!!!!!! the only way this procedure would NOT work is if the customer only had one key not two...or if they were coded improperly (unlikely) As for the FOB transmitter: as long as you do the first few steps QUICKLY then when you press the transmitter button twice it works like a charm...sweeet!!!!!!!! On a side note...the way this was handled, I am betting that Mazda tried to cover up that the 05 key works in the 04 car! Here is the link to Thew (from rx8garage.net) selling it as a special price to rx8club members: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...d=1#post663927 Here is the link to the procedure I used...just download the images that are attached in the first post (thanks MazdaMonkey and IFubar2000 for all your support)... https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-code-your-own-key-remote-43873/ -Jason (Truemagellen) PS. I'll post many pics later this evening, multiple shots, multiple angles open and closed! |
I also have the 2005 RX-8 key working in my 2004 RX-8 without any problems at all.
|
Let me point one thing out...some members have said you can program the New key with an Original Key and a Valet Key (if you only have one original key)
I can not verify this but....just thought I'd let you know |
I can also vouch for the fact that the 2005 key works on the 2004 RX-8. Just followed the posted instructions and it worked fine.
Side note on the remote programming. Not really a big deal but make sure to do all your remotes when you program in the new one. I was surprised when I took my car in for servicing and my old fob that used to work wasn't working. If you have more than two remotes and plan on using the third one in the future make sure to reprogam all of them. Best way I can think to explain it is if you add a new remote fob to your car the last one on the program list gets bumped off if you don't reprogam them all at the same time. |
Probably should have metioned that I just ran through the fob progamming instuctions again this time with all three fobs to fix my problem. Now everything (and all set's of keys and fobs) works great. That's why I said it not a big deal.

Me too . Mine is workigng great

Congrats on your 200dollar key man. Takegood care of that sucker
|
I for one love it.. its a sweet unit and very handy.
P.S. 175 $ is a far cry from 200 .. |
if you look at my last post #7, I added more pics :)
oh I forgot to mention the major reason why I wanted to get this key (posted before) I was always feeling like I was in a Ford rental car with the original 04 key/keyfob, yuck |
Can you put that on a key chain? I dont have many keys, just a house, mailbox, car key. I dont want to have to carry two sets of keys, kind of defeats the purpose for me.

it is funny when I called one of the vendors who had tried and failed to code the key I as asked them if it can be put on a key ring, they said no and suggested to drill into it and add a hole for it. https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...chmentid=37094 |
Ahhh I see it now, I was thinking that was were the key fit into the fob. Got it now. thanks
|
Kool keys man, I just have one question don't know if you can answer this but anyways, can you program the 05 keys to another rx-8 if the 05 key was already program to another car? example=Let's say I got 04 rx8 and my brother got 05 rx8, he gives me his spare key that was program to his 8, so can I reset it or just program it to my 8?

buy an extra 04 (the cheap one) key blank and program that one first so that he has two keys with chips coded...you can probably get it for under $15 the reason I say this is were aren't %100 percent sure you can code the new key off a valet key and an original key this way you both have two original keys to code off of, with the new cheapo blank as the go between |

Not the key to the car.. |

Think it will.....
If you code your brother's 2005 key to your car, it will start both.
The car's coil 'interrogates' the I.D. of the key and either accepts it or rejects it. If it is also registered with another car, it don't care. Yes, it would start both cars. S |
Sorry, can't resist but if you spend 175-200 for a key do you wear it like a watch or necklace? I mean the car is great but spending that for a key??

but think about it in a much different way...if you bought a closeout 04 for several thousand less then an '05, but missed out on the cool key...well under $200 is a great deal...since the 04 car and the 05 car are identical in every other way :D :D (besides white replacing yellow of course) |
Thanks for answering my question about my brother's key working im my car. It is exactly what I wanted to hear, so now I can ask him to trade me one of his keys. Hehehehe. :p

yes you can get both halves i jst did not list it that way.. I will order anyone any half they need.. BUt i will carry the package for sale (key & Fob) as one unit.
|
moved :)...probably a good idea
|
I sense some confusion here...the key will still have to have the proper cut to turn the ignition.
The "fob" section can go from car to car as a separate piece. When you do the additional key program function you are opening the PCM to accept additional frequencies..(it can allow up to eight) Be sure to have all the present "valid" keys ready for the procedure as it will invalidate any key that is not included in the key-on, key-off process.(including the valet) I think that makes sense..let me read it... yeah..I think I have it now. |
Perfect !
|
strangely enough, the key programmi nworks, but the remote programmin doesnt.
does it matter how long i turn to ON position, or how long I press remote buttons for? I'm tryin to program 3 remotes. Do I leave the door open? For each "verify taht door lock actuators lock, then unlock" step, do i just press lock once, or lock and unlock? |
ok the key (sorry for bad pun) to doing this right is completing the task within 24s...
1. Close all doors, make sure the hood and the trunk is closed (doesn't need to be locked) 2. Now open the drivers side door 3. insert key and turn the key to the on position (beyond the acc position) and then off 3 times exactly...leave key in place 4. Then quickly press the big black button in the door jam 3tims...it is big and rubbery it does not look like a button simply a large, circular, black, rubber nub this will cause a click each time you press it and then will cause the lock to make noise (unlock noise) 5. Now press any key on the first key fob twice, then the next fob twice and if you have a third press that one twice Good luck :) if you are still struggling describe in detail here what you are doing

hey thanks for the instructions... it worked out great. I guess I was pressing the door lock key and not the black thing on the driver's doorpost
now actually I have another q... how do i get a key ring into that slot? its impossible |

key ring insertion:
ok after further investigation it is definitely possible, if you till the ring at an angle while sliding it around it should reduce scratching on the front but best idea it to probably use a clip type hook and connect it to the ring...like on a necklace the crab arm/pincher design or something anyone else have suggestions? |
Well after using the key for a few weeks now I have some more good news to report...
1. already mentioned somewhere but NO more scratching of the dash pieces...no more dangly FOB (transmitter) to jiggle around dinging up the area under the facial display (gauges:)) 2. the range is MUCH BETTER for the FOB transmitter! I was at the Mall of America visiting a few places and parked in a lot on floor 3...when I went to leave I went to floor 4 and thought the car was stolen (considering the floors are IDENTICAL). So I'm thinking...um maybe just don't see it and it is around this floor...so I set off the alarm just in case it would help... and I hear it! but the sound is a muffled blaring! it is coming from below...through concrete, through rebar, and I wasn't even close to the location! My old fob I can only transmitt from several cars away...which is annoying when you want to make sure the car is locked from far away. |
i got my car in oct 03, and the key and fob work great:-)
|
I helped a fellow 8 owner program his '05 key on his '04 8. It worked no sweat!! Now I need to buy one. Damn....more money!!
- Irish  |
Went to the dealership and got mine cut this morning. Took longer for them to cut the key than it took me to program it. Lovin it so far! The keychain situation is kinda tricky. Can't seem to find one around the house that wants to fit... By the way Magellan they quoted me a price of 5 bucks to cut the key over the phone, but after getting there and having it cut they ended up not charging me (i think it was b/c i was the first one they have done so far or at least that particular guy)

I just bought an '04 RX-8; but it only had one key.
The dealer hooked me up with a key maker, but he said $90 for a Mazda Original blank. Is this a good deal? |
the original blank for the 04 or 05?
besides the blank for the 05 still requires the remote 05 style see: http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1112606399 |
It'll just be the '04key w/out the separate FOB :wallbash:
|
tell them to f-themselves :)
|
Lets say I get one of these that is cut for another vehicle, How much would a new blank key part be for this?
|
cheap
|
|
How does the key retract and eject? Is it a push-button mechanism or do you use a slide button on the side somewhere?

it flips out the side like a switch blade |

:dunno: hate to bring this back from the dead... but I have a question for truemagellen... I called the dealership asking them about this because I recently bought an 05 key from someone that is already cut. I asked the dealer how much the key blank would cost and they quoted $35. Now that I look at your pictures that you posted of your key and fob... what will I be getting at the dealership? Your key (actual silver part seems to be attached to a piece of the fob already. Will it come that way (that will actually just snap into the rest of the fob) ? Thanks for clearing this up for me :) |
What you'll get is this. Yes, it snaps into the remote.
|
Hi All - I know there are a million posts saying the 05 key works on 04 cars and it does... it took me 5 minutes to program it all without one single glitch. Overall I purchased the key off of eBay for $100... so I saved quite some money compared to dealers. Anyhow I still think $100 is crazy for a stupid FOB/Key... what is up with car vendors charging 200-300 dollars? I want diamonds on my key for that price...
