Honest Opinions on base speaker upgrade

Hey guys, its been a few months since I posted.
I guess that's good I haven't had any problems haha.
Anyway, yesterday I was cruising listening to some tunes when I noticed one of my rear 6x9's sounding kinda funny.
I set the balance and fade so that was the only speaker playing and it seems like the bass portion of the 6x9 took a poop on me.
I have the BASE speaker setup, not the bose, but I had already replaced the 6x9's with some lightning audio stuff.
They have little tweeters in them and although they're pretty cheap stuff they sounded better than the base speakers.
I currently have a 12" 1000w RMS RE Audio sub and a kicker zx1000 in the trunk.
I'm pretty happy with that setup. It has plenty of kick for me.
I think im ready to upgrade the speakers though.
New rear 6x9's obviously since one died. And also new door speakers.
I wouldn't be against new tweeters either if you thought they would have better highs than the stockers.
I would really like to save some money here, but I don't want to go with wal-mart crap either.
Anyone have some ideas on which speakers I should go for or which ones will fit correctly?
I think 5x7's up front and 6x9's in back and 1" tweeters? Am I correct?
I have the 2004 RX8 with the non-bose system.
Thanks for the input, Loagn

I would look for a very good 6.5" component set for the front and ditch the rears all together. If you're willing to do some work and your install skills are up to the task, you could also look into a 3 way component set. You could probably fit the midbass and the mid in the doors and replace the tweets up top. You'll want to amp anything you put in or you might as well just leave it.

as for specific brands and models, I'm a little out of the game so I don't know any off hand. You also need to add a budget and your goals for the system. You could put $30 speakers in or $3000 speakers. The car audio world is a pretty big world.

Something like these would work well in the front and don't require cutting into the black plastic cover underneath the door panel since they are the same size like the base speakers. Just drop them in, mount the crossovers (to the same location where the Bose door amp would be) and go.
Mounting the tweeters in the sail panel would require to cut out the stock ones, but that's very easy to do with a simple hole saw and a drill.

Or, if you don't want to deal with the tweeters, then you could even get these and be done with it very easily. Components will sound better though.
