Gauge Placement

Anybody have suggestions where to place some gauges?
I have navigation so I can't place them in the center, and won't the gauges get in the way of the airbags on the pillar if I mount them on the a-pillar?

I was thinking ashtray . . . . any history on this? I vaguely remember one guy installing a head-unit over the ashtray . . . .

Good luck with R Magic. I had one of those on order through Mazdaparts. They now want you to either buy their gauges with the gauge pod or ship your gauges back there so they can make the hole for them. I ordered it & waited like 6 weeks, and in the meantime they gave me & Matt (thew) the run around. Finally cancelled. If you are interested in it, call Matt & prepare to wait. I've gone back to my A Pillar units. I had ordered the PTP Gauge pod after the R Magic fiasco, but they are back ordered for weeks too (& you have the navi).

I'm intending to fit a nice pair of oil temp and pressure gauges in the ashtray too. The ashtray assembly also features the receptacles for the clips from the plastic gear lever cover. So you can't just take the ashtray away and replace it by a panel of some sort. No, you need to base your integration work on the existing ashtray assy. I'm intending to buy a spare one to work on it and try to make something nice. I think it will still need some flat plate added that will receive my 2 gauges.

I went for the VDO Vision Cockpit gauges. White at day, red at night, like the radio control panel.

Here is a picture of the full kit, including the sandwich plate, the sensors...

Sounds similar to what I'm doing. I plan to mount a couple gauges inside the ashtray so the cover will still function. It will be a tight fit but should work. This will require extensive rework of the part, some sheet ABS and bondo.

If there's enough interest I might make it a vacform ABS part and sell it for $75. Otherwise it's going to be a custom on-off.

The consensus is that the A-pillar pads are OK.

I might consider it if :
- you confirm it's based on the OEM ashtray lid, not a part made from scratch (is it?)
- I can find a way to reduce the protrusion even further

Thanks for the good quality pictures. The gauge integration in the round ventilation outlet is very interesting. Maybe some day for a 3rd gauge...

Guys I have 2 type of guage pods for RX-8. These were direct made line up with factory center dash pad. So it will sit direct right on the center dash. Below are some photos. If anyone is interest in them. Please email me. BTW, there are 2 versions. Thanks!

I like version 1. But it looks like you will have to cut up the dash. Are those holes 52 mm or 60 mm ? I would be interested.

Yes, version 1 require you cut the dash. They are for 52mm guages.

I don't get it. What is the center dash pad? Does it fit on the Sat Nav cover?

hrmmm
the ashtray and center panel mounts look awesome

I can't mount in the center cuz I have nav
I have a-pillar mountings - I never look there - my fave mounting was one gauge on each side of my steering wheel - in my Eclipse

I wonder if you can mount gauges right below the radio instead of in the ashtray, like that guy did with the turbo timer (such a ricer mod!)

A simple look at that space would tell you there isn't enough room to fit a 52mm circle, let alone a 60mm one.

Of course there is sufficient space down there. Check previous posts about this + pictures...

Can you provide a link? I haven't seen a picture in this thread (or any other) that shows a 52mm gauge mounted right below the radio instead of in the ashtray.
