I have an '05 key, but need a blank to cut. I'm told that I have to replace the entire upper portion, but when I look at the key in the midway position between in and out, I see there's a pin holding in the keyed portion. I'd like to get just one of these in a blank. Otherwise, I'll get an entire upper portion. The dealer wants over $70 for it, though! Does anyone have them for cheaper? Thanks!

Let me guess.....

You had your shiny new switchblade key cut at The Home Depot, and it didn't turn the locks, right?

Happened to me too.

I too noticed the roll pin in the switchblade part of the key. I took the key out to the garage, popped that roll pin out, and sure enough, just the key blank itself comes loose. The transponder lives in either the metal piece that the key blank fits in, or in the plastic. At any rate, if you have a botched cut, there is hope.

So, the next step was to go down to Lowes (closer to the house than the Home Depot, I stopped at HD on the way home as I had my switchblade key sent to the office) and get several keys made. I got 3 made, and tested them all before leaving the parking lot. All 3 keys turned all the locks, so I was good to go.

Back at the house, I took one of my new cheapy Lowes keys, and the mis-cut Mazda key, and traced the shape of the out-of-switchblade piece onto the new correctly cut Lowes key. 30 minutes of custom fabrication (that's a nice way of saying 'grinding with a Dremel') later, I had a piece that fit back into the switchblade. I drilled an appropriate sized hole for the roll pin to engage, and put it all back together.

Ta da! I'd saved myself the wait and expense of getting a new flip out key blank, for $3 in parts and 30 minutes labor. I believe that this is the only option presently, as I haven't seen anyone selling JUST the oddly shaped uncut blank that pins into the switchblade body.

Except for the extra ridge in the more universal Lowes blank, and some minor fabrication scars back right where the blank joins the key body, the replacement key looks just like the genuine article. And, it turns all the locks, and starts the car.
