Any updates on progress OverLOAD? I have a 2003 Mazda6 and have been waiting for a long while for this since the PIE solution won't work for me. I know about a month ago you were hoping to have it done in a couple weeks..... Are you any closer to a release? I'd be very willing to even test a pre-release unit for you if that would help speed the process up.

Thanks,
Phil

bad news...Nullsoft is going down...Winamp innovation has ended, I hope the program's code is released to the public so further development can continue in the Open Source community

what does this mean for the custom aux-in module's future (obviously we can work with the current version of winamp but support for other file formats...future OSs, etc?)

I do have some suggestions that will make your module generic and universal to any program...and xbox integration would be hugely successful

here is the news article on it: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11...axes_nullsoft/

here is the slashdot reference summary: http://slashdot.org/articles/04/11/1...id=120&tid=141

serial control with girder

I have used girder to control a home theater PC (with an IR-to-serial bit). It's a great little free product. It takes input from a variety of sources (serial is one of them) and has a learning feature so you don't have to explicitly handle the comunications protocol of a device, you can just capture it. Last time I checked. It had several ways of controlling PC programs, from things like sending button clicks via Windows messages (pretty effective), to emulating mouse and keyboard input. It can also take plugins to control specific apps, but I used a variety of apps with only the basic "find a button, send it a clicked message.

XMMS? I know it's not Winamp, but its a pretty accurate clone of the Winamp 2 series.

Does anyone USE winamp3? The last time I touched it, it was a resource hog. Of course I was running a P3 450 w/ 256 MB RAM before I got a Mac. It might be better on a 1+ Gig machine, but who wants a power hog in their car? Frankly, I think Winamp 2 would be the way to go because it was light and stable. But, then again, I was pretty sure Winamp 2 plugins worked in Winamp 3 (could be wrong). Either way, who cares? To play an MP3, you don't need animated skins and all that jazz.

actually they released winamp 5 already that addresses the fact that winamp 3 sucked and sucked away resources...they went back to the stable simple backbone of winamp 2 and reworked it...

this new one is the best of both worlds but since they are going down it seems anyway using XMMS or something else makes so much more sense thanks roberdot

Looking for

Hey Guys/Gal- I just bought my RX8, it has the Navigation system with 6CD changer. The problem is that I would like to have to be able to play DVDs, TV in the car.

I heard that there are vendors out there that makes after market OEM parts to enable a DVD/FM dash unit added to my RX8 to work inconjunction with the Navigation system. Am I correct? If so, where can I go to get one?

I also would like to have two head displays in the car. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

rx8garage.net offers plug-in solutions if you have a nav unit.. they have a forum on here, just go to the main page and scroll down to the vendors' forum lists... thew is generally very active on here, and everyone that I've seen that's dealt with him has been very positive.

Any body knows how to have added an after market OEM system to enable a DVD/FM dash unit with the Navigation system. And also to add two head displays in the car.

Damn. I got out of touch with the PC world REALLY bad (apparently) after I got my Mac.

Either way, having an XMMS solution and a Winamp would be fine. Winamp will still work, even if it isn't being updated anymore. It was a great MP3 player last time I used it. Even the Winamp 2 series will work in the future. All it has to do is play MP3s (and maybe do visualizations, which it will).

I would love to develop, (or see develpoed) a decent in-car interface for windows media player. The Music Database features in WMP10 is without equal. To have access to that media library, in a simple in-car screen, would be near ideal! There's got to be a decent way!

windows media player is one of the worst players out there actually...a serious resource hog it manages to fumble file formats, crash, and lacks a decent set of shortcuts

miserable visualization core...graphics are poor and bogs down on even the most powerful of machines

after WMP 6.4 it has been seriously downhill for the basics

I could go on with how bad it is but I don't want to bore you

I simply stated it was great in its media cataloging abilities. I have not seen a product that could compare with it in that department. Making a nice, simple front-end for it would result in a very easy to use solution. Resource hog isn't that important for my in-car computer, as I have no intention of doing more than listening to the music in the background, while using navigations software.

Has any of you guys realised how annoying it is to switch between CDs, each containing nearly 20 songs?

update on Winamp demise...the llama's not dead yet! Legit news reports (cnet, etc.) were over exaggerated and mostly bogus http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...24242&from=rss

The real question though, is what is up with the AuxMod? There hasn't been an update for about 3 weeks now. Did the project hit a brick wall or something? Anyone know what is up?

Hi truemagellen.

In fact I've read this thread long ago. And I'm hoping to read some good news about it on a daily basis. I can't wait to have one, and make good use of my iPOD. I can't use the PIE-AUX/whatever solution since I got a 6.

Maybe I thought it would've brought a comment from OverLOAD.

Have a nice day

(OverLOAD: If we must be patient, we will, no problem. But if the project ever fails, tell us ) - keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback marchhare.

Even tho I open up/solder xbox everyday, I don't feel that safe with my brand new car's HU!

You guys out there using the PIE-solution... One question came to mind, would there be a way that the iPOD automatically powers on/off when starting the car ? Is it doing this? My iPOD will be hidden in the middle compartment (or elsewhere) and it would be VERY nice if we wouldn't have to press "PLAY" on it every time.

I guess i'm asking for too much, uh?

Have a nice day,

Krass

If your comments do not pertain directly to Overload's product development, please do not post them on this thread. Take it elsewhere.

Any date set? Any specific thing we need to do to get on the list of people wanting to purchase this when its complete?

Thanks guys.

Hi All,

Thanks for participating in the forum. We're slowly getting there with the module. We're got a pre-production prototype that will mechanically fit in the tape housing just completed and in testing. It will also be possible to use a bracket to install the unit in the Head unit.

Things are moving pretty slowly at the moment, as I was in S. Korea for half the month so far, and I'll be in Florida a little later. This is still just a hobby, and I have a real job, so as much as I might like, it's not my no. 1 priority. We are comitted to completing the project, even if it continues to be delayed for many more months. Sounds scary, but I don't think it will come down to that. We dramatically underestimated the amount of work that it took to get us where we are. Hindsight is 20-20 I guess. It has still been a good experience.

We've got 99% complete software, which successfully performs all the necessary functions for Aux-In, PC control through WinAmp v2+, and with a special harness, to an iPOD. We just need a bit more road testing to uncover any remaining issues.

We're soon going to be in the process of finding an assembly house that won't rape us too badly. The costs are pretty high at the moment, but the higher volume production should improve it substantially. We've converted over the design to use mostly surface mount parts to improve the costs for the volume of production that we're expecting.

I've got close to 1000 people on the email list who are interested in this solution. I want to thank you all for your comments. It should only be a few more weeks before we are finished!

Regards,

OverLOAD
