Cup holder lid slides when braking!

Can someone please post a picture of a working, non-broken lid so we can see how it's supposed to look? I recently bought an 09 and noticed this same issue.

Also, anyone know of a cheaper place to purchase a replacement lid besides a Mazda dealer?

That doesn't sound right. I had the same problem and bought a new latch through Mada Motorsports. Part number F151-55-28XA-02 ("Lock, Lid"). List price is ~$15. You should be able to order that part.

The whole center lid assembly is something like $40. It sounds like they sold you the whole thing, including the cup holder section (p/n FE01-64-39XF-02 - Holder, Cup), list price ~$294.
