Cheap Laptops for CANScan tool

Hey all.. does anyone have a site or link to a cheap laptop site? I want to purchase a laptop but dont feel like spending 900 dollars just for a laptop so I can use my CANScan tool to track what the car is doing..

Anything cheaper than 900 is cool

Thankx a lot....

900? just to run canscan...let me help you with this one...you may want to move it to audio electronics or even performance first...otherwise this thread might die off...

Try out www.ebay.com

I think the price of good, brand new laptops nowadays is right around $900. I'm sure you can find an excellent slightly used laptop for less than $900 on Ebay.

I hate dell but let me just give you an idea home much the MOST you should pay for a laptop...this one is $599 after rebate...to much power for what you need and 'dude you'd get a piece of crap' http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=04&l=en&s=bsd

I dont even think I can move threads.. just ask the mods to move it...

What I really meant about 900 was that I would only use this laptop to help me tune but the ones that I have been looking at were around 900.. and thats just too much to spend I think...

Thankx for the site for the Dell laptop.. thats a pretty good deal. Just need to find out if it has a USB port which it should since one of the options was for an external USB floppy drive.. now.. 600 I dont mind spending for a laptop.. thats pretty good.... but maybe I can do better.. i'll keep hunting...

The ebay option to me isnt very appealing.. I would want a brand new laptop or refurbished from the mfg with warranty.. nothing used.. dont want the hassle...

Wait for the day after Thanksgiving sales. Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA always have cheap computers for $399/$499. You might have to get in line at midnight, but you'll get a cheap computer.

repost supreme...personally I think for the prices we are all showing you are better off buying a mini-pc, an an lcd monitor, now you've got a whole pc hooked up in the car all the time, forget a laptop

end-of-lease

I've bought a couple laptops for this type of purpose for under 500 canadian (P3-500) - at www.maxiumwarehousedirect.com - they sell end of lease product from the other half of their business - leasing laptops and desktop machines to companies.

I don't know what kind of hardware you are using, but CAN maxes out at 1MBps, which I doubt a car uses - most likely they use the lower, but more reliable bitrate at 128kbps.....any laptop should be able to handle it - I use stuff at my work that runs off CAN at 1MBps, with pentium-based devices (custom hardware, but same generic processor). So, any scanner that has a USB or Ethernet to CAN bridge (I'd stick with ethernet, just a little safer) should be fine on anything with a little more guts than a PII-300 (a rough accounting for the overhead of Windows & all the other crap on the machine).
