CD Won't read

Hey all.

Just bought an 03 RX-8 yesterday. Massively impressed by it. The only issue I have is that the stereo won't play CDs. I've tried a number of them, some originals some copies. A few will play for a couple of minutes then give up and eject the CD saying "check disk" others simply don't play at all and are ejected after about 20 seconds of reading attempts.

Is this a common issue? I assume the lense has gone. If so what would I be looking to replace? I've trawled through these forums and I get the impression that it isn't as simple as an all-integrated head unit.

I have the bose system with the CD changer if thats any help.

Thanks in advance for any help

I get that mostly on disk 4 and 5. second time it happened. I'm just gonna save up and buy the tape player one, I mean get a car pc....If I could I'd do the tape player mod but I don't know where to get that, and from what I hear I can get the car pc to do actual readouts and display meters and stuff.

Well I'd be most likely to grab whatever i need from a scrapyard to be honest. Is the CD mechanism a separate unit from the headunit then or is it contained within it? If it's contained within then i'll probably just grab myself another headunit.

Awesome. Thanks for that.

Just found this thread which shows how to remove the headunit and that the CD Mechanism is separate. Might try it later to see how easy it will be to remove when i'm at the scrapyard.

Thanks again for the help.

I've got a bust cd player too, it wont do anything but clunk a couple of times. If the power is disconnected to change the cd mechanism will i need the code for the radio when plughged back in? is it true that 3 wrong attempts means you have to replace the head unit?
cheers

I've never even seen a radio code for the 8 except in a thread where someone posted that Aussie's have radio codes.
