Does the factory head unit (non cd changer version) support a changer other than the in-dash option, and if it does what model changer?

You might be able to purchase a CD changer interface adaptor to connect it to an Alpine see here (2nd item down)

So will this thing work if you have the nav system? I think I read in another post that it might not work. Basically, I am trying to get the guys at phatnoise to release the phatbox for the rx8 and they need to know whether or not it can use external cd changers.

damn with all the electrical engineers on this forum, why am I answering this - I'm a biologist who doesn't solder and doesn't even like to do her own wiring!!

I have looked into this subject quite extensivley. From all my work I have came up with nothing but bad news. There is ways to do it but sound quaility will be less than cd quality. At least its stock so if the right thing comes along we will be able to get a changer other the the stock (clarion, off bose of brand) changer which I believe is overpriced.
