It sounds to me like youre not an audiophile here, first of all Mark Levinson is one of the best high end companies out there! sounds to me like all you guys are impressed with is how loud the system is and the amount of bass it has?!!

The bose system in my '01 miata ate my CD, so I had to have it replaced. The sound was never great in the miata, although with a ragtop and only two door speakers there was good reason for that.

The doors have 9 inch "subs". The subs are EQ'ed to provide a FLAT response, but by design, a 9inch woofer that doesnt have a huge magnet placed in a door panel isnt going to give you low low bass...which is why its EQ'ed for a flat respose. There is a line between good and bad, but I think most people dont know what makes a good sound systtem different from an exceptional systen. I am a huge audiophile and I knew this Bose system wouldnt even compare to the $3000 system I had in my honda civic. from an engineering standpoint, i think the reason they didnt add any subs is cuz there wasnt any room. We have a tiny *** trunk as is. Like I have said in other posts, louder isnt always better. Yes the bose system is better than stock and no factory system will every compare to a well put together aftermarket system. Most of us probably got bose because we wanted other things that come in the GT package. You wanna hear something good, roll down your windows, open your sunroof, turn the stereo OFF and listen to 9000 rpms of fun...thats the best sound

No stock car audio system can match a well put together after market system but Mikefrombarbbie just don't get that point.Mark lLevinson might make awesome home audio but that doesn't make them all of a sudden the best car audio system.I bet Mikefrombarbbie don't even know what's a RTA without asking someone.

To truely experience the music the artists has produced, an audio system needs to be capable of hitting the lows(subwoofer can only produce), midbass(midbass driver), midrange(midrange driver), & highs(tweeters).The type of music is not that criticle.If a sytem can play all 4 of the frequencies then it can match any kind of music.

The stock Bose system sounds more than good enough to me...and I consider my ears pretty well trained in the audiophile ways. It's got a good, crisp treble, flat midrange, and tight bass. At least it doesn't sound like some of the really hollow sounding systems I've heard in most American cars. And I mean, come on, it's a car...the sound system is going to be competing with road and car noise and my attention to traffic, so it's not like I'm going be catching all the really good audiophile stuff like extension, decay, transient response, soundstage width and depth, inner detail, transparency, etc etc. while driving along.
It scares me too that I've read some posts here mentioning that people have their stock sound systems up around volume level 15?!? Heck I can't get past level 5 without cringing. Watch the volume level people, or you'll regret it the rest of your life when tinnitus sets in.

Volume Level 5 in my 8 is barely audible (Bose System). I typically listen to mine around the 20-25 Level when driving. Its close to 30 with the windows down and the moonroof open. Despite years of DJ'ing and listening to music loud (but clean and crisp), my ears were recently tested and are quite fine. If your system is at Level 5 and makes you cringe, I think there might be something off....anyone else think so?

Level 5 sounds about right for normal, daily driving. Level 20-30 sounds a little too extreme. It is next to impossible to hear anything outside if there was an emergency. I guess it is because your work environment makes you used to the high volume.

I also have the stock (Bose) system. Although ideally I would prefer it around 15 - 20 for the volume, I find if I bump it up into the mid to high 20's it just seems to sound better - maybe a little more bass/treble & less mid tone? I did as someone had previously suggested and turned off the audiopilot - that did seem to help somewhat with the "muddiness" that I noticed.

Yes..the system does sound clearer and cleaner and slightly higher volume levels. I keep my Treble @ 5 and my Bass @ 4 w/ AudioPilot On. Around the 20 level, i think it really shines. At lower levels, I just dont think the speakers are getting enough to make them "shine" if you believe they can at all. Even though I dont DJ anymore, I still enjoy listening to my music louder than the norm. When I have people in the car, I keep the volume low and now that I think about it, it does sound like **** lower, but once I crank it a little, it sounds much better.
