[QUOTE=TRU681]Obviously, you have not heard much & you're not an audiophile.Stock systems are usually average at best. Some are actually almost good but an after market system will beat a stock system anyday!Even the high end car's who put good brands of speakers in their cars just put basic models in it.The high end models are available through audio shops. They are not available in an option in your local dealership! Sound quality is not just about the quality of the speakers. One of the most important aspects of an audio system is the sound stage! So a Mark Levinson system is nothing compare to a lot of brands out there, too many to mention.[/QUOTE

It sounds to me like youre not an audiophile here, first of all Mark Levinson is one of the best high end companies out there! sounds to me like all you guys are impressed with is how loud the system is and the amount of bass it has?!!

Mark Levinson makes great Home Audio(true) but car audio is another beast(true). That's why I see plenty of Lexus owners got to custom audio shops to swap their whole system! Most highend companies that make great home audio don't spend much time researching & testing on car audio before making their products.Mark Levinson is not that impressive in car audio like DynAudio or Focals.Have you heard of PHoenix Gold, Zapco, Audison.

The bose system in my '01 miata ate my CD, so I had to have it replaced. The sound was never great in the miata, although with a ragtop and only two door speakers there was good reason for that.

I'll have to agree on both points! No stock car audio system can match a well put together after market system but Mikefrombarbbie just don't get that point.Mark lLevinson might make awesome home audio but that doesn't make them all of a sudden the best car audio system.I bet Mikefrombarbbie don't even know what's a RTA without asking someone.

Mark Levison option package on the 2006 GS430 adds close to $10,000 to the price. Of course they jumble a bunch of extra in with it.

Well it's $6200 option package. It includes a bunch of stuff like Voice ACtivated navigation with rear view camera with by itself is probably $2500.So $6200-2500= $3700 without navigation. The Rx-8 GT package is $3900 option without navigation. With navigation add $2000=$5900.So the Mark LEvinson audio system is not worth all that much.Maybe $1000 or $1500 at most. My custom car audio system retail is over $15k.

Nakamichi happens to make one of the best Sound Quality decks available in car audio. The Nakamichi CD700II cost about $1300 for a cd player. Anybody in the car audio industry will probably know that the CD700II is one of the best available.

I just got my 8 on Friday night with the Bose System. I was very reluctant about the Bose because it tends to get shredded on the boards. I wanted people who are reading these posts to know that I am suprsingly happy with the system. I think it's better than many stock system's out there. You aren't going to win a competition or anything but to the average person looking for something to jam to down the road it does the job.
I believe the problem people have is with the lows(bass). Based on the music that my teenagers listen to (Hip/Hop, Rap etc.), bass is a big part of that music. I can see the younger poulation needing additional base. Since I don't particualrly care for that type of music, the upgraded Bose kicks just fine for my Rock & Rock, Alternative & Heavy Metal. Sometimes the bass needs a little tweaking, but in most situations it sounds fine. INMO

To truely experience the music the artists has produced, an audio system needs to be capable of hitting the lows(subwoofer can only produce), midbass(midbass driver), midrange(midrange driver), & highs(tweeters). The type of music is not that criticle. If a sytem can play all 4 of the frequencies then it can match any kind of music.

The stock Bose system sounds more than good enough to me...and I consider my ears pretty well trained in the audiophile ways. It's got a good, crisp treble, flat midrange, and tight bass. At least it doesn't sound like some of the really hollow sounding systems I've heard in most American cars. And I mean, come on, it's a car...the sound system is going to be competing with road and car noise and my attention to traffic, so it's not like I'm going be catching all the really good audiophile stuff like extension, decay, transient response, soundstage width and depth, inner detail, transparency, etc etc. while driving along.

It scares me too that I've read some posts here mentioning that people have their stock sound systems up around volume level 15?!? Heck I can't get past level 5 without cringing. Watch the volume level people, or you'll regret it the rest of your life when tinnitus sets in.

Level 5 sounds about right for normal, daily driving. Level 20-30 sounds a little too extreme. It is next to impossible to hear anything outside if there was an emergency. I guess it is because your work environment makes you used to the high volume.

I also have the stock (Bose) system. Although ideally I would prefer it around 15 - 20 for the volume, I find if I bump it up into the mid to high 20's it just seems to sound better - maybe a little more bass/treble & less mid tone? I did as someone had previously suggested and turned off the audiopilot - that did seem to help somewhat with the "muddiness" that I noticed.
