install an aftermarket alarm with ignition controlled door locks. i use the viper 791xv with remote start. doors lock a few moments after you get in and start driving. unlock when you turn the ignition off. this is a high end example, there are other, less expensive alarms available which will do the same

This is one my complaints about the RX-8.

For carjacking reasons it is wise if the car would lock the doors once it starts rolling.

Just like all luxury features, I know you can just do it yourself, but for $30K+ I think the car should do it for you.

I agree.
Personally, I simply hate this "feature" in other cars, and am so happy that the RX-8 does not do that. If I want to lock the doors, the button is right there.

My old car had a microswitch underneath the parking brake, so that when u bring the parking brake down before u drive off, it will trigger the microswitch and lock the doors. Not sure if this can be done on the 8.

Um... don't drive a 30k+ car through the ghetto. Personally I hate the auto lock feature.

It would be very easy to tap the parking brake light and use a relay to lock the doors.

Looks like someone has been playing too much Grand Theft Auto.

Tell me...what good is your little autolock feature going to do you when a perp runs up to your window pointing a 9mm at your forehead? You're going to wish your doors had been unlocked so you can jump out of the car faster.

Anyone that really wants to jack your car isn't going to come running up and hope you left a door unlocked. They'll be packing, trust me.

I don't think the autolock feature is to prevent car-jacking. It's to prevent what happened to my girlfriend few years back... a kid on a bike opened her passenger side door and took off with her handbag along with her cellphone, wallet, cards, cash... She's caught in a traffic while it happened and couldn't do anything.

Lets see, you'd need a standard automotive relay with a momentary circuit of some type. You would attach the relay to the parking brake light then to a momentary circuit, then to the lock circuit. I’m going to look for some pre-built momentary circuit.

how about connecting the parking brake light to the NO(normally open) of the relay and the output to the lock circuit? when the parking brake light is extinguished, the circuit will be closed and will lock the door...

That's another reason.

I am less concerned about the driver side but the passenger side is more important. Many car jackers do jump in from the passenger side and make you do all of the driving. And BTW car jackers and thieves do work outside the ghetto.

Just like some cars get a reputation for being easy to steal, the RX-8 could get a reputation for being easy to jack.

Want I don't understand is why someone is adverse to the auto-locking feature. Do we have a bunch of stuntmen here who regularly need to exit the vehicle while it is on? It is probably the same crowd who don't like daytime driving lights.

Don't want the car cramping their style I guess.

I seriously doubt that. I think it's safe to assume that an RX-8 owner is intelligent enough to lock his doors when he gets into his pretty car.

I live in Miami and locking your doors comes as second nature right after you get in so even if it had an autolock I'd still be pressing the lock button.

Also keep in mind that you're driving a Mazda. This ain't a Lexus, Mercedes, or BMW.

I'm not adverse to it...I just think there are far more important issues Mazda should be concentrating on with this car...like auto climate control for instance.

We're talking about a BUTTON here for christ's sake.

First off some of the base Mercedes, BMW and especially the new IS from lexus are in the mid-30's and have that feature.

Automatic climate is MUCH MUCH more difficult to implement than an ecu signal to lock doors at 5 MPH. It's so simple why didn't they do it? It's a very very minor issue, but still an ergonomic oversight.

BTW it comes to auto-climate, "keep in mind that you're driving a Mazda. This ain't a Lexus, Mercedes, or BMW."

what is this comparing to luxury cars? I had a grand cherokee that was $25K and had auto locking doors.. not to mention a bunch of other cheap low 20K's cars that come with auto locking doors.. the jeep also had headlights that automatically turned on or off.. it was some luxury car, eh?

Little things

I was looking for a car with climate control when I was researching cars. The Mazda 6 has climate control in the Grand Touring package.
This made it tough to decide between the 8 and the 6. Then the salesman asked my wife if we had kids yet. She said no and he responded with, "You can always get the 6 later.

One does have to be careful when implementing an auto-lock function so a person doesn't get auto-locked out of the car.

An aftermarket alarm monitors the dome light wire so if a person opens a door it will disable the auto-lock feature.

Similar to not being able to lock the doors with the remote if a door is open.

Does anybody know if this is not implemented and can be activated, either by dealership or some "combinations" (like pressing window-down, radio-**** and stepping on the brake on the same time)?
