Okay so I have the OEM NAV right now, but am thinking I would be better off going with a Carputer. Would something like this be good enough?
http://global.shuttle.com/Product/ba...ew.asp?B_id=16
Specs:
P4 2.2Ghz Celeron
Upgraded 250Watt Shuttle Brand PSU, true wattage
1GB DDR 333
ATI 9600XT 256meg Video Card
250Gb Maxtor hard drive 16meg Buffer
16x LG Dual Layer DVD Burner
I want it to run Satellite Radio, and Nav mainly.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Where would you put that? It's an SFF bud. Not really Carputer friendly.
Personally, I'd go something Mini-ITX, in a very tiny case. www.mini-itx.com has some nice stuff.
Cheers

i use something like that. works fine.. you just have to jump through some hoops.. the cool thing is you just disconnect and you have a desktop...
mine is a shuttle sff. i dont recall the #s but i think it is a 61.. i am running a p4 478 chip. dvd burner.. the video and sound are in the card...
i use it for nav, and scanaliser.

You should check out http://www.mp3car.com/
Their computers have similar specs to what you are looking at but the enclosures are much smaller. Also you don't need a good video card for videos, only for gaming and then really only if you have a high resolution monitor. Since the carputer LCD's have a max resolution of only 800x600 you shouldn't have a problem.

I'm still confused about how a P4 can be a celeron.
A celeron is a celeron and a P4 is a P4.
Heat depends a lot on where the computer is located in the car and climate.

i dont know how to explain it other than that.. i have a friend that has an old p3 celeron powering a server.. i gave it to him...
sure heat is about ambient temp.. but does the p4 run hotter that the new stuff what they may be??? my 2.4 running 3.5 runs at 62 c under 100% load for 24 min... yep that is hot, but it runs and runs and runs..

they made a p3 and a p3 celeron. the same thing with the p4 the celeron had less memory on the chip.... i think it was like 128 vs 512. L1 and L2.. so the celerons were not as fast, but you could overclock the hell out off them..

You're saying that since they are the same core, that makes them the same cpu. The celeron just has less on die cache.
yeah ok, i concur

1ghz - 32c at 100% usage.
the mobo temp is about the same, if not a little less.
Via mini-itx systems are very power efficient. I'm running a dc-dc 90 watt psu with plenty of power to spare.

So I'm a little confused. Would this be sufficient or not? I would buy one specifically designed for car use, but I have this just sitting around here, and figured it would be more economical to use this if possible.
What problems will I have to overcome using this?
