Ambient light over shifter DIY?

I borrowed a CX-7 for a few days while my heater was getting fixed, and I really liked the ambient light that shone down over the shifter area. I used to have an A4 that had this as well, and I think it's a really nice touch. Has anyone added this to their car?

Reminds of the bmw m3. Good luck if you decide to DIY, make sure you make a post afterwards.

Myself I would just buy a lighted shift ****.
But if you really want to do this you should be able to take the light in the ash tray and move it some where so it shines on the shifter pretty easy.

follow that DIY and instead of putting 1 led try 2 or 3 and that should do the trick. I did it and put only 1 led in there and it does provide a little light but i wish i would have put 2. Maybe something i'll redo when the weather gets warmer

Or just get the lighted shifter ****

I think I may just call up Mazda and see how much a replacement light for the cx-7 costs and then install it. I think the light they use has a special lens that helps focus it downward. I'll post a DIY if I go that route.

EDIT: Looks like it will have to be purely DIY. No way I'm paying $67 for an LED, lens or no.

Where was the light in the CX-7 located? In the ceiling? I was thinking about doing this too, maybe mount an LED in the door of the sunglasses compartment.

We drove a 7 tonight. The price may be worth it. It is a nice touch and would blend perfectly w/ the 8's interior.
