Personally, I'd recommend no alarm - really.

No one, but no one pays attention to a car alarm other than to think "some idiot's car alarm is going off." When I drove a vehicle with an aftermarket alarm I used to set it off accidentally all the time and never got a second look from Police, security guards or anyone else. No one older than 12 will be scared off by one.

The only good thing an alarm will add is features such as a remote-activated starter kill, interior light activation on unlock, etc.

Otherwise IMHO an alarm is a waste of your money.

The only thing that might be worth it is LoJack; people often think that if your car was stolen and recovered you wouldn't want it back anyway, but it's your insurance company that decides whether you get your car back, not you...

In my Miata I got an alarm, not for the sound but for the second ignition cut off switch. Anyone can get your vin number, go to a dealer and pass themselves off as you and get a new key made to bypass the Mazda unit.

My alarm works via my remote and will disable the engine if someone else tries to take it.
