I found an article where a guy got the parts at the junk yard. While he put them on his truck, I believe it's still the premise and should work for the RX-8. Plus, the guy says it can be done for under $150. http://4x4dakota.8k.com/powerrearqtr.htm

I've been givig this some thought as well and I think using a electric linear actuator would work. All you need is about 2 inches travel on it, and make some sort of lever mod on the standard clip to enable the actuator to operate it. Linear actuators arent all that big, and it scould be mounted inside the door panel. Tricky part would be the mechanism to conect it to the standard poper.
