4 questions about the MP3 player

I have a question about the MP3 player before I order one. Those who already have it probably can easily answer it.

- can it handle folders?

- does it display either the IDV1 or IDV2 tags (either one would be fine)

- how is the navigation within the MP3? I like to listen to audio books and a single MP3 can be as long as an hour, so it would be great if the fast forward would work well. I have a portable MP3-CD player right now and the fast forward is about 3 times the speed of regular play. So forwarding to a certain position.. takes LOOONG. This is reason #1 why I want to buy the built-in MP3 player

- when the ignition is turned off and then on again, does it remember which file was played last and possibly at what position? The regular audio CD player remembers the song and position, if I remember right. Would be *superb* if the MP3 CD player did so too..

Thanks for your time,

-Peter

I don't know the answers to these questions, but you might find them by doing a search on "MP3 player" in the Audio & Electronics forum....

Yes it handles folders, but will only play randomly within any given folder.

It reads only the 1st generation IDV1 tags.

In my opinion fast forward could be faster, I think faster than x3 but can't comment how much faster. Fast backwards is horrible!

- when the ignition is turned off and then on again, does it remember which file was played last and possibly at what position?
YES, to both parts of the question.

Ok those answers sound great. I just ordered the MP3 player from Trussville Mazda over the phone ($252 + $10 shipping) after my local dealer quoted me $345 + tax ... ehm.. $375?

How is navigating through the folders? Does it list the folder name on the center console display? I'm just concerend that looking for a particular song out of 120 would be a pain in the butt. Also, how does burning an mp3 CD work? Instead of choosing the audio cd option which automatically converts the mp3s into wavs do you choose the data cd option? Can you change tag types on old mp3's or do you have to download new mp3s? Sorry I know its a lot of questions but I'm trying to figure out if I want this or XM radio. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer

Navigating thru folders:
Skipping thru folders will list a different "CD" number, CD1, CD2, CD3, etc.. If you set the display to show "Folder Names", then the name of that folder will appear in the console.

MP3's are data, so you burn a regular DATA disk.

Changing tags on old MP3's:
Yes this can be done using a number of programs out there. Make sure to first change your ID tags before burning your data disk.

I have over 20 data disks full of mp3's (average 150 songs per disk). I will not even bother trying to correct all those ID3 tags. I usually leave my player to display MP3 filename which will always show.

Thanks for the reply! How do you set the display to show folder names? I'm understanding this as the song titles, folder names being displayed on the center console and not the NAV screen correct b/c I do not have navi. Does the mp3 player skip as much as the single CD player? Sorry for all the ignorant questions.

Folder Names

I couldn't figure out how to display folder names, seems that all you get is "CD 1" for root folder if there are MP3s in the root,
or "CD 1" for the first folder, CD 2 for the second one etc.

I haven't tried a CD with more than one level of folders yet.

@kristopher:

I meant folders with subfolders with subfolders.. I'm not sure how easy it would be to navigate through that, I guess a printed directory structure would be handy there.

I was wrong up there about not displaying the folder name.

After pressing DISP a few times, it will display the folder's name. I had not recognized that instantly because the folder name was identical to the files in it, the first 12 characters at least.

The display only shows 12 characters, I think.

It only displays the first 12 characters initially, but you can rotate the DISP **** to scroll through the rest.

The maximum display (w/scrolling) is 30 characters.
It will handle subfolders up to 8 deep (according to the manual).
Check out dBpoweramp.com for conversion and burning utilities -- good stuff and most of it is free (and what isn't free is cheap).
Note: set the burner to "never make v2 tags" or something similar if you use their burner.
