12000k HID

Anyone have a 12000k HID upgrade yet?
I ordered one today, just wanted know how it's gonna look. Is it hard to install these things btw? I have the regular halogen system right now and it sucks goat-ass.

truemagellen 01-03-2005 11:41 AM

well it should look awesome...maybe it will look TOO blue and not legal but no big deal...just say audi's have it and it is 'legal'

definitely take some pics for us...I'm considering a higher temp bulb for the factory HID system

I'm glad your upgrading, it will look sweet!

Rotary Rasp 01-03-2005 12:17 PM

I just got my new 8500K bulbs, i am upgrading the factory HID...should them installed in a few days.

MrWigggles 01-03-2005 12:45 PM

Some might know this some might not...

Unless you want to have blue headlights there is absolutely no reason to go past 6500K or standard daylight. (5500K is considered pure white by most so daylight is a little blue to begin with)

12K is VERY blue. The blue wavelengths of light also blind the dilated pupils of oncoming drivers a lot more. Don't be surprised if a few people are ticked off with you when you drive.

In fact a 5500K HID that was twice as bright (i.e. lumens) as a 12000K would probably less offensive to oncoming traffic and help you see the road better.

Yeah I read up on the lumens and k's before I had ordered the system, I contacted the people at misterjung.com on the lights. Anyways the higher the "K" the less lumens you'll get, but you get more color outta them. I'm a fan of purple hue hids, and I think these will look pretty sweet. If not I'll go for the 7000k as a second choice. Either way I'll post a DIY and a lot of pics when this is done! Here are a couple of pics of how different each hid's look: www.misterjung.com (I'm not affliated just for reference)

I think that the 7000k are more blue and the 12000k no? Check out this pic of some hids: The left is a 6000k the middle is a 7000k and the right is a 12000k.

FYI,

The black body curve and the CIE 1931 color chart:

http://www.videoessentials.com/images/res_31cie_lg.jpg

And the Kelvin table to tell where on the chart 12,000K is

http://www.videoessentials.com/res_f...colorblackbody

At about .27x, .27y, 12,000K is a very bluish white and bluer than 8000K. Whether a manufacturer is accurate in reporting the color of their bulbs is a different story. My guess is the manufacture is calling them 12,000K because "12,000K is a bigger number and thus must be better 8,000K"

If you like the look, so be it. But you could be more distracting to other motorists and you probably won't see the road any better.

Just curious, what are the stock RX8 HID's?

TxRx8 01-03-2005 08:19 PM

I changed my mind on the 12000k, and ordered 6000k instead. I figured Functionality would be better than color. Sure it's not as bright as the 4200k, but it's a good balance, maybe the best balance of looks and visibility.

Apparently the HID topic is huge on other boards, I checked out the Mazda 6 boards and some guy on there ordered the exact same kit I'm getting. It's a McCulloch HID 6000k. He's got video and a couple of pics. It looked great inside the projector housing and I made up my mind right there. I had to get these!

Hopefully he wont mind if I link his vid, so here it is:

And here's the link to site with his pics:

cool thread, hadn't even thought about the different HID levels/colors.

i like my stock HIDs.. once and awhile i get someone flashing me and i flash them back. i imagine that thier eyes get burnt out and feel ashamed.

heh. but seriously, i prefer driving with my 8 since at night i can see SO much better.

mikeb 01-07-2005 07:23 PM

very cool
whats the price on 12k

I didn't know it went up that high

Rotary Rasp 01-08-2005 01:23 AM

I've seen 15k...on that note, I have a feeling the most manufactures, other than philips, lie about the color temp. It is so hard to measure the temps that most people would never know what color temp they have.... we just assume that beacuse it is purple that it is 10k-12k.

$.02

TxRx8 01-08-2005 03:22 AM

Dude I just installed the McCulloch 6000k and they look SICK! I was really pleased with the color and the light output. Took around three hours to put 'em in. Most of the time I was trying to figure out where to mount the damn ballast! I finally put it right above the oil-coolers. I hope it's safe there. From the pics I saw of these bulbs on the net the looked light aqua blue. Very different story when your right in front of them. They look like the Audi HID's. More purple than anything. Just the color I was going for! Another weird thing is when I took some shots with my digital camera, the lcd displays them as light aqua blue!!
That's friggin' weird. I'm gonna post the pics tomorrow night, they look...damn. :D

Oh yeah, Mikeb, the 12000k are $305 shipped from the guy I got these from.
He's a cool dude too. Lives in Cali somewhere btw.

I would agree...you can buy a color temp meter from a HIGH end photo store but they are expensive, several thousand dollars...yes I said several thousand  so no one would check anyway

I did not know it is SUCH a high end photo item....I went to a specialized camera shop in hopes of obtaining one (before I knew the price) they said they don't sell them and but could order one from Japan or German...deposit? $1000 yikes!

mikeb 01-08-2005 09:23 PM

I'll post some tonight for sure. I didn't have time to take some today but they'll be up later today. Don't be fooled by the blue color in the pics, they're actually bright purple in person. Very nice!!! I've gotten compliments from everyone that's seen 'em.

mikeb 01-10-2005 05:30 PM

lets see it

TxRx8 01-10-2005 11:21 PM

6000k woo hoo!

Here's some pics I got with my camera phone, my other digi-cam isn't working right now. So this is the best I can do for now. Rember these lights ARE NOT BLUE,
they're a bright purple that emmit a pure white light. No hint of yellow in there what so ever. I love HID's!!!! I'm getting my bud's camera tomorrow, there'll be better pics then. Hope y'all dig 'em!

12000k lights also set off people's laser detectors like the V1. I hate those lights. they totally piss me off.

mikeb 01-11-2005 03:07 AM

they look nice
but you got 6k HID not 12K right????

TxRx8 01-11-2005 08:20 AM

Yeah, there McCulloch 6000k HID's. The 12k were too much color not enough light.
