10K+ for OEM NAV install...
I have been trying to get a dealer willing to sell me a Shinka with NAV. Long story short, the word is that it CAN be done by ording all the OEM NAV parts from the dealer and install it, but the parts alone will cost upward of $10k plus labor! So this is pretty much the end of my quest of "The Perfect Shinka."
On a positive note, it turns out Mazda is in a phase of cutting off 06 order and beginning 07 models. So the waiting game begins to see if Mazda will finally wake up and give us a Shinka with NAV. Will post if I know more.

Get a TomTom 900, Garmin Nuvi 360 and Asus PDA GPS for the price of even the factory OEM nav and get 100X the usability.
I was fooled itnto thinking i needed the OEM nav too, but thankfully i got smart.
the Nuvi fits in my pocket and i can hand it to the GF in the passenger seat to look **** up...it's how it should be...joystick text entry blows, the oem system sucks!

I remember someone else adding a Nav to their car last year. I'm pretty sure it was less then 10 g's. That's nuts!

My OEM nav works great. Its gets me from point A to Point B 99% of the time. The 1% is because the maps may not be up to date. I find a lot people want their car to damn near drive itself. Some people compaint the points of interests etc blows, but thats more a function of the map than the hardware. For me, I want to give it an address and have it take me there. I dont care where the nearest best buy is

There are lots of features you don't have, that every basic system should offer.
If you wish to get "home" the OEM is fine. If you wish to get to an address...fine too.
But:
1) Joystick interfaces suck. Period. Nav systems, in general, should be touchscreen, and should be intuitive.
2) Information...how much of it does the OEM have? Resturant info? Store info? Road construction and/or traffic? This is a small info DB.
3) Updates...good luck waiting for those.
All of the aftermarket solutions offer better interfaces, more info, and more updates.
Originally, i wanted the nav, seeing it as a clean OEM solution.
One day i was introduced to the TomTom500, and was suprised at how nice it was...tried the 700 and 900....even better. Played with the sony NV70....sweet-ish...then borrowed a garmin nuvi 350 for a week and fell in love.
It's not OEM, or intedrated, or part of the car...which were all things that drew me to the NAV. But honestly, it opperates better as it's owm device...it's like an iPod that has information and directions.
It has information on where i am...hotel/food/ect...with details like reviews and attire!
I can hand it to my GF while driving and let her sift through a few resturants...then press a touchscreen command and it automatically dials(her phone or mine via btooth) for reservations...sick!
The traffic works pretty well, and the interface is pretty damn good!
Edit:
*Nav is technology...not a standard...technology advances...it'll always suck having it "in the car"
it's like comparing the PHAT Noise system to an ipod.
In the future, companies will be better suited enabling the device, than integrating it fully into the car.*

I have the stock nav I like it. It works good enough for me and keeps the dash clean. I woulnd't want portable gps , I don't want my dash to look cluttered. But that being said I wouldn't pay 2 grand for the oem nav , I bought my car used and it had it, I would go with a aftermarket headunit like the one here https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ghlight=custon I am guessing you can something similar to that for little over 2 grand installed.

But if he wants a shinka and nav like your saying it will cost 3-4k for just the parts. Hes better off going aftermarket it will play dvds, have ipod connection, and some even have traffic updates.

the oem nav is not the best, but it does it's job and is seemless. On the other hand, 4k for it would be insane. Not worth it, especially given the amount of work it would take to do the install. It's more than just a dvd drive and a screen, it has gyros and sensors to keep tracking the car's location even when the gps signal is down.
You can get a very nice aftermarket one for $1500 range, it would have better features and better UI than the oem, but it's not going to be as seemless

Stuck in a love triangle
Ten grand for the nav parts? Are they talking about the old 04-05 nav system or the new 06 nav system? The old one isn't even close to that much. Like everyone else has said, 4k max. I doubt the new 06 nav is much better than the current one other than the fact that it has voice recognition, but I haven't actually seen it myself yet so I can't really comment.

It should be the 06 NAV, and I will get the part list to see how did they break it down and come up with that number. The guy I talked to is pretty good and I am trying to get more info about 07 Rx8 from him, but that could take a while.

Want info on the 07...wait a few months(many months) then start asking zoom44 and others...he kept us up to date on the 06's and broke the news on the shinkas. This guy at the dealer knows less than nothing.

2. The info is related to the Map database, not the hardware. Road construction and or traffic requires it be integrated into a real time service like XM Traffic or something. As far as I know, only the new Acura RL has this feature.
3. Updates are out and have been out for over a year. I am the one who lead the charge to call NavTeq and bitch about this.
Keep in mind this system, at least the one in my '04, is 3 years old and then some if you include the initial design and engineering of the car. You are right, technology does change. I believe the 06 has a voice recog. system like the Acura TL does. Adding the system now for 10K or whatever is dumb, but if I were buying this or any car again, I would go stock system any day, UNLESS I could integrate an aftermarket Head Unit system w/ GPS in flawlessly and cleanly. We all know that is a bitch right now with our 8.

The RX-8 nav that most of us (04-05 owners) have is slow and ancient compared to the systems you can find in other cars today. Its only real redeeming factor is that it's 100% functional while the car is moving. But last I checked, majority of OEM nav systems are functional while the car is moving anyway.
If I could start over again I would buy one without a nav and put together an ultra clean looking CarPC like this one.

Just downloaded the John Cleese voice for a change of pace. Mostly he says all the same stuff as the standard free voices but every once in a while he adds a humorous quip. They could have done a lot more.

The best part about the portable GPS systems is it's yours. If you sell or trade in you just unhook it and take it with you. You'll never recover that extra 10k if you try to sell or trade in the 8 later on. Besides, 10k for nav is insane.
