skid plate...

Ive searched through the forums and I saw one post talking about metal skid plates and I was wondering if anyone knows of a website where I can get a metal skid plate.

I found this in the vender section. Is it what you're looking for?

No problem. For future reference, though... If you type "rx-8" and then what you're looking for into a search bar, these things come up pretty quickly. These forums are really more for discussions, than they are for quick questions. Some people will get pissed about these things... others will just ignore them, but I thought I remembered looking at one of these not long ago, so I thought I would help you. I'll tell you this, There are mixed thoughts as to weather or not these aluminum trays offer any real benefit, or even if they may decrease the efficiency of the radiator. You should search the threads for more information. Welcome to the forum, by the way.

That undertray is a Bad design. 13lbs is heavier then stock and all those louvers are reducing the air flow to the radiator. Get a stock plastic undertray or have a metal fabricator make a lightweight aluminum undertray with no louvers until after the radiator.

Now that is the way it should be made. Total weight and what thickness?

Thumbs up

Highway,

How costly is it to make your own? I would imagine some things (like a rotary tool) are things you have on hand, but I'm curious about the aluminum, and fittings and such. And does it seem much heavier than stock?

It looks REALLY good...

If you already have the tools it's going to cost you less than 70$.

My plastic tray is holding well though, there really isn't any serious need to replace it imho. On a track car... maybe. On a street car what are you going to tell to your insurance or the cops if you run over a pedestrian or hit something?

Agreed about cost and necessity.

I however am contemplating making one. I use the mazdaspeed nose and there is a gap left between the stock plastic undertray and the bumper. They use some cheap metal taps with rivots to connect them. Plus I got some other custom stuff going on in there so it just makes sense for me.

weight is close to stock maybe a bit less. thickness was 1/16 or so I believe. cost I'm insure of as I had stuff laying around and the tools to do it. cost was around 50 I would say and a few hours easy of you time. also a tray that is not all beat up for a template.I did make one for another member not too long ago
