well if you are going to do it right, you have to fill in the dimples where your hand would go right now using the handles, and then paint it, and install the kit...i am trying to find a shop in the DFW area that will do it for me.

not true...if your battery dies, and you install a manual switch you can still get in the car...

Most places i have talked to about doing this to my 8 have strongly suggested the manual 'kick-out' so that if this happens you have a way in. One other suggestion at the high end places, was to put an external battery terminal somewhere on the car, so you can give the car enough juice, to open the doors, and pop your hood. This costs significantly more than using the manual kick out, but could also be an alternative to jump starting your car by popping the hood.

It onlypops off the hinge by 4 inches? That makes it sounds like a real pain in theass to open b/c youd have to grab the edge of the door. Forget thatman. I thought it would pop out at least 1 - 2 feet.

If you got the manual door pop installed, wouldn't that be a very easy way to break into your car? Or would the alarm still be activated? I'm assuming the latter, but I still wouldn't want a smart thief that spots a car with shaved handles to be able to break into my car by just looking for the manual pop with only an alarm to protect me...

Although, I imagine cars with shaved handles are so rare that a car thief would most likely be totally confused as to how to open the door. Did I just answer my own question?

I'm actually going to be getting this done. The solution is very simple with the 8. Since I'm already installing both a trickle charger and a molex connection used for AC-DC power converter and jumper cable connections, hidden behind the front bumper, it's very simple. I'll have a pair of modified jumper cables in the trunk. I'll shave the door handles, but leave the trunk key hole. If the battery dies, I manually open the trunk, get the jumper cables...done! Also, if you are worried about a key fob loss or death, thus preventing popping the doors, install a remote swith in the trunk. It's not like you'll never have your key on you. This is the ultimate secure way, no switches or cables, etc. on the exterior of the car. Hope this gives you guys some better idea of a clean install.

devoid...that is wear i was going to put the manual switch...but i like the idea of hooking up the power anyway, since i want a standard plug on the outside of my car for other things, might as well put in the external jump port as well...

Thanks for the idea.

Old topic I know. But it seems it was never really finished. Can anyone tell me a rough estimate on getting a shop to do all this without getting your pants pulled down. What is a good type of door popper to use? What are some things to look out for when getting it installed? I have intentions of getting it done (to my yellow 8 I'm in the process of buying right now) and it's one of two things I want done. I like the idea of keeping the trunk key and having the manual in the trunk in case your battery dies, any other ideas/suggestions/pics. Really appreciated. Thanks.

hey marvin, just google "shaved door handle kit" or look in mini-truckin' or "street rod" or one of those mags, the most popular kits I've seen are from Auto-Loc I believe, me and my buddys back in the day used to do it the budget white trash way by going to junkyards and using trunk poppers from old caddys and lincolns, when I had mine done on the car I was driving it was back in the early 90's and the only way to get a decent solenoid was to find one of those, my alarm had some extra inputs and an unused 3rd button so we tapped into the brain and it worked fine, it was on a hatch though so no big woop. If I did it on the 8, I'm wondering if you could put the manual switch in the trunk, since it opens with a key as well, then you wouldn't have to worry about someone finding it underneath the wheelwell etc. and trying to break in or whatever. just a thought

edit: here's a pic of a jetta with all 4 doors shaved, you can find those kits at summit racing as well as several other places.

shaving door handles on daily driven cars is a bad idea. I drove around with shaved door handles for for 4 years. Overtime the motors and actuators will burn out. Your door will get locked up and will not be able to get in. Even with a remote emergency release handle cable, it's main purpose was to be used only as an emergency. They are mainly used for show cars that are only opened up a few times a month. Believe me, i went through 3 sets of motors, 2 shops, and an empty wallet...

Here's a shaved 8

Here's Devoid's web site if you want to check out more http://rx8.mine.nu/
He's got a feedback link in there so I'm sure you can ask him some questions. Check out his RX8 section and look for 'body shop' albums to see some of the work in progress. He did it right (same for his debadging) and the quality really shows.
