Door edge meets marble planter...


Searching here I didn't find anything specific and googling seems to tell me it can't be fixed without high cost (potentially another door to replace). I don't think it's a job for a paintless dent repair fix based on the location, am I right? Anyone with experience on repairing this type of dent?

 

yeah thats too sharp for pdr.
short of bodywork and re-painting the door theres not much you can do.
I'd try taking a hammer to the backside of the door and knocking it out a little, as close as you can to flush. at least then it wont be as noticeable. just wrap the hammer in some duct tape so you wont chip and scratch the paint on the inside of the door when you're hammering it.

 

maybe. thats a huge maybe for PDR.

normal repair will be around $2k.

if i were you, heat up the paint first with a heat gun, to soften the paint, then slowly hit the back with a rubber mallet.

 

NO METAL HAMMERS!!! take your time or youll **** it up

 

This is what I was thinking, just hitting the metal, even with say a hammer in a cloth or hitting a wood block against the metal - will the paint just crack?

Maybe the metal is straighter but then I have a new problem with the paint. Even with banging it out carefully, is cracking of the paint coat a problem?

Some heating makes sense to soften the paint, I'd have to look into the heat gun.

 

I'm surprised its not cracked already actually. thats a pretty sharp ding. and thats a whole new story when it starts rusting. just take your time when using the hammer. and yes, heating it up will help. even just a blowdryer should do it.

yea, when i read "hammer" umm that did not sound to right, at least with a mallet you dont make things worse

 

definitely not a $2000 job.

I'd say about $600-700. Maybe even cheaper depending on if you know a body shop.

2-3 hour repair, spot refinish front door/full clear, blend rear. R&I the normal stuff.

a mallet and a 2x4 will probably take out most of it if you're careful enough.

 

If I were you id pay a body shop to deal with it. Don't cheap out and risk making it worse.

 

get a block of wood, 2x4 will work, then have someone hold the door solid. Hit the wood against the bend and it will come out a lot. Still will be noticeable. Cost to get repaired will vary from about 500-1500 depending on if they blend the quarter panel once they repaint the door.
