Painting a Car??

I'm probably going to get reemed for this post but oh well lol.

I was just curious if anyone has ever painted their own car, and how much time/work it takes to do it right and with a show room finish.

I was very interested in possibly a two tone paint job but i wanted to see if its worth it cause i dont have $1000 to shell out to get a factory paint job.

let the reeming begin.... lol

I painted my own car. Did almost no preping lol. 10 minutes of crappy 600 grit wet sanding and 10 minutes of masking. 20 minutes to spray GG lol

I painted my own once. My Dad had found a job at a place that made HVLP spray guns and I was able to put one together from several boxes of junk. I wasn't going for a showroom finish but was at least taking care with filling, sanding, priming, masking and dust control. It was starting to look ok, but I never got past the first color coat. My new car came in after 6 months wait and Dad decided he wanted my old one *right then*. I couldn't even pursuade him to let me put on a clear coat. For him everything was "good enough". And to be sure, he got another 70,000 miles out of it. Since the paint was never sealed, it was what you'd call "self-cleaning".

First off.. 1000 dollars isnt going to get your a factory finish.

Check some of your local community colleges, might find one with an auto body/paint class. If you want it to look good, and you want to do it yourself, it takes practice and skill.

Think of it this way, you can teach anyone to weld, but you can always tell someone who's good at welding. It's the same with paint, anyone can slap on some paint and have it last, but it will look like crap compared to someone who did a good job.

Ok there is a ton of bashing here for do it at home paint jobs. I would just like to say that it is not that expensive 150 dollars for a gun with all necessary tips for each coat, another 150 for a compressor that can regulate at about 30 psi consistently. All of the paint and reducer (price varies bout will be in the hundreds, probably somewhere around 500-600 for factory colors with enough clear and everything for a complete car finish). The last thing you need is enough plastic to and air filters to make an at home paint booth (not expensive here at all).

Actually I'm sure I'm missing things off of the top of my head but anyways those are the main cost items. So basically around 1000 dollars will cover all costs for a complete car repaint.

Using factory paint and good spray guns you will be able to get a factory finish so I dont know why people say you cant because it does not have all that much to do with the materials but has a ton to do with the skill of the painter.

If you really want to do this I would practice on a spare door (from some wrecked car at a junk yard) with cheap primer paint and clear coat that way you can figure out just how to get a good non drip spray.

First time out of the gun you probably wont get factory results (I know I didnt and I only painted part of my 98 camaro that I had) but with practice you will be able to.

Let me see if I can find a thread on DIY paint booths on another forum that will give you a lot of insight on the subject because most classic car rebuilders paint their own at home in either a garage or just simply out in the open (which in most states is legal but that is something you would have to check

Here we go:

http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showth...ht=paint+booth

This will show you how a ton of people painted their own cars at home and the results/quality they had. There is a ton of info on it here and I plan on doing this to my 2nd gen z28 in the future and if I get good results I will do my 8 as well.

Just re red your original and if all you are wanting is a two tone paint job that will not be bad at all (less sanding and priming or taking apart of the car) you could probably get away with a 2 tone paint job like buniques for about 500-600 dollars but you have to take your time with you measurements of taping off the lines for your two tone. (dont cheap out and go to a paint supply and get the tape there for like 15 dollars a role. trust me it will help and save headache)
