OEM spoiler install?

Hey all,

Sorry if this has been asked before... I did several searches with no luck. Couple questions:

1) How easy is the installation of the OEM rear spoiler? Anyone on here done it / have pics of the process / would like to write a DIY? I see the steps being something like:

- remove the inner trim of the trunk lid
- line it up
- line it up again
- line it up again just to be sure
- drill some holes (center punch + metal drill bit enough for this?)
- screw it in
- enjoy

If this is all there is to it, I think I can handle it. It there more?

2) Has anyone tried the "knockoff" ones sold on ebay, such as the following

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/04-06...58055065QQrdZ1

You can get it painted to match... I would be a little worried about the shade being slightly off (I heard TiGray was pretty difficult to match?) Anyone have any personal experience with the ebay kits - build quality / whatever?

3) I really need to see a mazdaspeed one in person... I am really hesitating between the OEM and that... The OEM is sexx! and blends in so well with the styling, but the mazdaspeed is so nice as well. I am a little concerned though with it looking a little "rice". I'm sure others have gone through with this process - what made you choose yours?

edit: 4) Any issues with rust after a self-install?

no, need to remove the inner trim of the trunk lid. two holes must be drilled on each side and not sure but maybe two holes up top. lining it up is indeed the hardest part. shouldn't have issues with rusting if the spoiler is bolted tight on the trunk, but if you want you can always dabb paint on the metal to prevent it.

No need to remove the trim? So the bolts are visible from the outside? As in, someone can walk up and remove my spoiler if they were so inclined?

bolts are not visible from outside.

someone can remove it ...if they can pop open your trunk...

point being that the trim doesn't cover the portion where the bolts will go.

Holy cheapness!

Then again, nothing comes for free.. Should I expect it to snap in half from some well-aimed stealth pigeons?

FYI, there is a third hole on each side that is needed, which has a white retainer clip...but again, no need to remove the trunk lid liner. If you open your trunk, you should see two indentations where two of the bolts need to go.

Buy the spoiler from someone on the forum, many people take theirs off to replace with other spoilers...they will most likely be able to get you the hardware...an Ebay spoiler probably won't come with the needed hardware.

I second Kwescott's advice: wait for someone hear to sell theirs since you'll probably get a good deal and the hardware.

Option 2: Check with Paul over at Mazmart (forum vendor) He might have one lying around.

go to sportwing.com. i got my spoiler from the site. they did a great job matching the paint, and the spoiler comes with installation instructions and a template to mark where to drill the holes in the trunk so it aligns properly. I heard of the site thru my uncle who owns a mazda dealership and buys spoilers from them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Actually, shortly after asking this questions I went ahead and ordered one of the ebay kits. I was very surprised at the speed of shipping, color match is perfect (as far as i can tel ), and the install was a piece of cake, even for one person to do. Here's the thread if you're interested. I promised pics but still havent taken any

Ok I have an ebay one. The bolts are not visible because they screw in from inside the trunk into the spoiler.

Installation was easy. It comes with plastic screws that you screw into the spoiler. The ends of them are pointy so you line up the spoiler with them screwed in and then press down to make little dimples that show you where to drill (just 4 holes btw). Instead of pressing down and possible making dimples in the wrong spot I put fingernail paint on the pointy end of the plastic screws and painted where the holes were going. Drill the four holes, put the 2 sided sticky sealer stuff on and screw it in. Not that complicated.
