New Owner needs serious help!!!

Just bought my 2004 RX-8 about a month ago and already have the itch. Never had a car that was worth being proud of, but now that is fixed and I need a few pointers. I have always been a bike guy, and my GSX-R is my baby. Now that I have built her to my personal taste, I decided to finally jump the gap into the car world. I have searched a lot of old threads to get a little more familiar, but I'm still a little lost and need some help.

1. Does anyone make an after--market headlight/taillight? Searched all vendors here with no luck.

2. Where is the best place to find a decent lip kit and "side skirts"? Love having "sleepers", but like a little more style than stock lines and don't want a full body kit (very wicked bottom at bottom of driveway)

3. What badges have holes? want to remove and get a little creative with them. Just want to know which badges may have to stay put.

4. Starter upgrades for beginner? Again, used to Street-Bikes. Have never tackled a car project, but learn fast and have a lot of tools and patience. Though it's an automatic, that's what I found at the best deal. Time to make lemonade out of lemons. Love the ride, crave the speed. At least it has the pedal shifters.

Any help is appreciated!!!!

Thanks for the help. Sucks to hear the "MAZDA" portion has holes. What is a "bhr ignition"? I assume that is something ment to limit that nasty flooding problem (already had it happen). And what is a "mm cobb ap"? What are these designed to do/ what are the benifits of these?

I have seen those on other threads. I wasn't that impressed. Only reason I was thinking of replacing them is because I have the moisture problem in the tail-light and never "baked" a light before.

the moisture problem thing is easy man. i had probably 2 cups of water in my tail light when i bought the car. just took it off the car and put a hair dryer on it at low to clear up all the condensation then used rtv to make the new seal. easy fix

You gotta search. . .

BumbleBee is talking about some things that are very very common topics

BHR Ignition: Black Halo Racing Ignition Solution. This kit cures the weak ignition coil system in the 8... won't stop the 8 from flooding though.
(You can google Black Halo Racing and find BHR... but chances are they'll find this thread...)

MM Cobb AP: MM = MazdaManiac... He is "the" rx8 tuner. He uses a company called Cobb's Accessport... this is a tuning device that effectively reprograms your car's ECU. Doing so can adjust fuel trims, oil metering, the temp that fans turn on, and much more.

As for the tail lights... you can replace the tail light gaskets if you're getting moisture, or search for other fixes like drilling small vent holes, use silicone to make a new seal, etc. Again, search the forums, you'll find solutions.

As for mods. . . that's personal preference. Intakes won't get you much performance gains, more sound, the same goes for a catback exhaust... removing the stock cat will free up some HP, but make the car emissions illegal. Other than that, its cosmetics body kits and such... You won't get too much additional HP out of the renesis without going full out into forced induction. Which on a lower power 4 port automatic isn't a good use of funds in my opinion. . .

You'll want to spend sometime researching what problems are common to '04s before you go nuts with Mods.... there are some "weak points" in the '04 design being the first model year that should be addressed first.

heres the head lights and taillights rotr8 was talking about

unless you wanna drop 5k just to upgrade head and tail lamps i'd look at other mods, like rims and maybe a drop

btw seibon has a decent lip kit thats a replica of the autoexe kit, i had it on my car before but have since switched back to stock body

Thanks for the imput. Think I will have to research the MM Cobb Ap to see what benifits there are with my model. Is that a "plug and play", or does it need to be regulated professionally. I appreciate the help. Deffinatly need to do some digging on the '04 problems (hope they are not too big).

Thanks for the imput. i will have to look into what benifits the MM Cobb Ap will have on my model. Is that a "plug and play", or more professional regulated? I appreciate the help. I am not familiar with the problems on the '04, but I will have to look in on it.

"Mazda Maniac" is a person. . . you use the cobb to log data during specific drive cycles... email him the files, then he emails you a tune which you upload to your car based on the information you've gathered.

A Cobb Accessport is a nifty tool without a professional tune, but if you want to "tune" your car and not just hide check engine lights, you'll need a professional to do it. Hard to justify the cost of the unit if you're not going use it properly.

The Cobb plugs into the OBD-II port. . . so I guess it is plug and play.

Keep on searching. . .
