is the mazda spoiler functional?

i was debating getting the xmen spoiler b/c its understated enough yet still stands out but was thinking it probably wasnt functional. then i got to thinking, is the factory spoiler functional? i know ive discussed the wrx spoilers functionality w/my dealer (apparently it is) but never thought to ask about the 8s

dealers will say anything.

the euro spoiler is certainly functional at higher cruising speeds, the north american optional spoiler may also work a little bit, but the low-drag contoured "wing" (it looks like a wing, but doesn't work like one) does little else than add style (if that's what you're after).

Are you referring to the Mazdaspeed spoiler? I'm not sure what the "low-drag contoured wing" is.

I have the wind tunnel tests from here in Japan, and I would think Mazda wouldnt put it on if it didnt serve a purpose (humm)

Yes it is functional... Four positions, all offer varying levels of down force...

The factory Mazda spoiler claimed (in the thick RX8 book that I have) to have a drag co-eff of 0.32 and adding the spoiler bring it down to 0.31

There's functional (does it do anything) and effective (does it do anything worth mentioning). I have my doubts.

Those who have the MS wing installed can try this experiment: push down on the center of the wing. See how much it deflects for a given amount of pressure. Note it doesn't take much pressure to deflect 1/4". Get in the car and drive at 70 mph. Note the top of the wing relative to one of the defroster lines. Stop the car and remeasure. How much did it change?
