HID Headlights and Halogen headlights

Can you transfer the ballast from the HID and put them in the regular halogen light? I damaged my left headlight and they already have the HIDS, I figured instead of buying the 700 dollar hid one, i was going to buy the 300 dollar halogen one and transfer the bulb. Is this possible? Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah, Im saying that I have the bulbs and what not, the only thing that is messed up on the headlight is the lens, and its condensating b.c I cracked it. The bulb and the ballast is fine. I want to know if the headlights that are halogen from the non-hid rx-8's are able to take the HID headlight bulb and ballast. Understand now? Sorry for the confusion, and yea I have a few pics Ill post up today

Nope....

The halogen model would not have the projector lens, just a big reflector.

No can do.

However, they are the same shape. If it is just the front lens, then you could buy the cheaper one and switch out the lenses.

What? What do you mean by that? You mean my headlights aren't projectors? How come they beam the light like a projector headlight would? Also look like projectors.

The only thing that I can think of being different is the "eyelid" that contains the light from a certain point on down to the ground.

I have checked out the headlights on HID ones and Halogen ones and I can't see any difference at all except for the lighting setup behind the projectors. Where is it documented that the Halogens only have reflectors and not projectors?

I am new to the forum but I think that you can buy the cheap ones, heat them up in a oven (take out the bulbs, wires and rubber seals) and after heating them you can take out the lens.
Do the same procedure with your lamps to take out the damaged lens and replace it. If you do it just right you might even be able to re-use the original glue on the lenses. If not you can buy 3M automotive or plastic glue.

I want to do the same thing to mine to install some Angel eyes but havent had the time/courage to put my lights in the oven, but since yours are damaged, What do you have to loose? :-)

I will post a how to DIY when I get around to it.

I honestly have never seen a RX-8 with the halogen headlights, nor do I know why they would make them. But they might have projectors in them, I have halogen headlights with projectors, but the lens (the thing that looks like a magnafine glass) is cut completely different for halogen lights than for HID lights. If you look closely at them you can see rings/groves in the lens, and the cut of those is what mainly make the difference. But I still think you could buy the cheaper ones and switch out the covers.

Wait... you have halogen headlights but you're also saying you haven't seen RX-8 halogen headlights? What car do you have then?

I have halogens in my RX-8 and yes they have rings/groves in the lens. You can't see the bulb from outside. I don't see why projectors are exclusively matched with HIDs only. They have been around before cars even used HIDs.

I own a MX-6, and I custom made headlights with Hella 90mm projectors(halogen). What you have described is a projector set up, thats what I was assuming they would have. I wasn't saying that projectors are exclusively for HID, I was saying that the lens of a halogen projector is a different cut than the lens of a HID projector. The grooves that you see are cut differently in an HID projector lens. HID lenses have the grooves too, but they are cut differently since the light is different. I'm sorry to cause confusion, and I hope I explained it better this time.

I have the base 6 speed, rx-8 with Halogen headlights.
There is NO external visual difference between Halogen and HID.

I just ordered the 7000k Xeon for my Based Rx-8.
I'm going to try to transform the Halogen into HID.
Will post pic later.

I knew it!!! You have an MX-6!

Sorry Sean, but an MX-6 is not an RX-8. I understand where you are coming from. My GF has an MX-6 and she wanted projector headlights. I searched and all I found were pseudo-projectors for the MX-6. They look like projectors because they are just shaped in small circles. But what they really are, after taking a closer look, are just flashlights attached to the headlight assembly. There were JDM projectors but were too expensive for her budget though.

Now, just because this is the case for MX-6, it's not necessarily the case for our RX-8s. You are basing your advice on a different car. Not a smart thing to do.

RX-8s have projectors regardless of what kind of bulbs they have (Halogen or HID). Period.

No no no, I have a MX-6, but I don't have MX-6 headlights, I have these:

I custom made them out of these Hella 90mm lights, the low beam(left) is a projector(halogen, H9 bulb), the high beam(right) is a free form(halogen, H9 bulb).

I know a lot about headlights, I know that there are halogen projectors I have stated that a few times in this thread now. I also know that a halogen projector is completely different from a HID projector and I have stated that a few times in the thread now as well.

What I am saying is that the halogen lights that you can buy will not work right with a HID set up, because the lens on the projectors are cut different. The halogen projector's lens is cut for halogen light, and the HID projector's lens is cut for HID light(generally known as a D2S capsule).

They are cut differently because the light output is different. Halogen light is similar to a normal house hold light bulb. The D2S capsule is a glowing sphere of light.

The rings in the lens of a projector are cut to accompany the type of light output it will be recieving. There for, the halogen headlights for an RX-8 won't work properly with a HID setup. And those "HID upgrade kits" that you can buy off of ebay for your halogen setup arn't a good idea since they won't work properly in your halogen projector.

Will the light shine through if an HID setup is put with halogen projectors? Yes, but it isn't going to be working the way that is should.

Now I hope everyone understands what I am saying.

OMG, would you please go see real RX-8s? Not theories based on something else. And yes, I know what you're talking about, aftermarket MX-6 headlights. Those that you show are flashlights.

What are you talking about???

HID Projectors are HID projectors, Halogen projectors are Halogen projectors. They didn't go to outerspace and bring back a never-before-seen type of projector lens for the RX-8!!

The pics that I posted are not flashlights, lol. Those arn't aftermarket headlights. You can not buy a set of headlights like that anywhere in the world, they are custom made with HELLA 90MM PROJECTOR AND FREE FORM HEADLIGHTS, you can buy the parts to make them but you can't buy them already made specifically for any car. They are HALOGEN PROJECTORS which are different from HID PROJECTORS. The cut in the lens (for those who don't understand what the lens of a prjector is, it is the "thingy that looks like a magnafine glass") is different for halogen and HID. How many times should I explain the same thing?

-Sean
