Halogen headlight assembly to HID Xenons?
Halogen headlight assembly to HID Xenons?
I have a Grand Touring model that came with HIDs, but I got into a minor accident and the housing for my HIDs cracked. If I bought a halogen headlight assembly without bulbs could I transfer my existing HID ballast and xenon bulb to the halogen lens, or is there something special about the housing for the HID Xenons that come on the Grand Touring model?
What I'm asking is, is the halogen casing exactly the same just minus the HID ballast and xenon bulb? Or would I have to specifically order the HID housing in order to have HIDs? Just trying to save a few bucks by getting the non-HID headlight assembly and transferring everything over, since the bulbs still work minus the cracked housing.

Bump... does anybody know? I heard there is a self leveling motor in the HID Xenon headlight assembly, but I have my old one... is that not something I could just put in the new housing?
No they are not the same. The Halogen housings have a different cutoff and some have speculated that the lens itself is a bit different, this to help project halogen light beams better. If you have the old housing and the lens is still intact, look up the DIY on how to dissasemble the headlight assembly. Then replace the lens and cutoff of the halogen housing with your old HID housing.
Or a better alternative, assuming that both of your headlights need replacing, is get the halogens, and then retrofit a set of E38 or Acura RDX lenses for even better light output.

On the topic of Headlights
Unrelated to the OP but same subject.
I have a 2007 manual base model and the only difference between the sport package and the base manual is HID and fog lights. I've been researching to replace the headlights for HIDs and it seems a conversion is impossible. If I go the expensive rout, is it possible to replace the whole headlight from halogen to Xenon? meaning ordering a set of OEM xenon HID headlight assembly, including the ballast and bulb and replace the stock halogen headlight?
I know they run about $1,000 but my car is over six years old and compared to my wife 2013 mustang with xenon makes my 8 look even more dated.
I've done research on this and other forums and the only discussion seems to be whether the lens is the same between the halogen and xenon or if the ballast with bulb will work with the halogen headlight housing.
