Center Exhaust?

I was thinking of doing a center exhaust set up that would have a triangle tip coming out of the rotor symbol in the back bumper. Have any of you seen something like this? I have searched and did not find any results. It looks pretty easy to do. What issues do you think I would have doing this?

It's been done by a few members; I'd be wary of melting the black portion of the bumper. You'll have to cut a good distance around to prevent this from happening and that in itself may detach from the aesthetic look you're going for.

Thanks for the links and inputs. The melting issue is my major concern and then the amount of surrounding material needed to be removed and the sagging effect afterwards. Thanks again

HaydonGS 02-09-2010 09:52 PM

You could use something like gold reflector/heat resistors (I've seen this a couple places like in the engine bay of the Mclaren) but maybe that would keep it from melting the plastic.

i've been thinking about doing this too.
my plan was to get the kenstyle rear and doing a RE Amemiya/greddy rx7 thing with the exaust

and do that through the section below the license plate here

You can forget your triangle tip idea, because the tip will be tiny. :lol2: You'd have to cut out the triangle completely, so you could have an exhaust tip sticking out far enough, so it won't melt the plastic.

What exhaust is this? This is exactly what I wanted to do. The tip size would be an issue if it was the triangle, but this looks good!

Well I did it... Works great and only took about 2 hours and cut a bunch of weight. Sounds great and cured the high rpm stumbling issue I had.

dsire4u 03-31-2010 11:45 PM

video??
let me hear your sound man.

MaRxtin 04-01-2010 12:18 AM

idk i think it would only look right if it fit on the triangle part

Rotr8 04-01-2010 06:23 AM

not my cup of tea, but at least the contours of the bumper make it look like it was made for that area, and it looks pretty good too.

BigC94 04-01-2010 06:24 AM

I only cut out the triangle for the exhaust hole and the oval Borla tip I used fit right in. It all fits pretty clean and was a no brain mod. I agree a rotary shape tip would look good. I'll post video and sound clip and better pics soon.

Thanks, it is different and that is what I was going for. It is hit or miss with friends of mine whether they like it or not. The factory cut out in the bumper helps it have a finished look. I still need to mesh the stock openings.

It was finished up nicely back in 04 I just lost the pics Of it done

monchie 04-14-2012 12:29 AM

Never knew there was a thread about this...lol

Anyway, center exhaust looks stupid to me...just my .02 cents.

I want that muffler !

shakeyourbrakes 05-14-2012 09:41 AM

Even with the kenstype I think it'll look stupid. Unless you get rid of the exit ports on any bumper it'll look like it was just stuck in there. That's why that rx7 with it looks so good, it was made for that exhaust

ooobigfire 05-14-2012 10:27 AM

I wonder.. Mabye take off the bottom half (unpainted part) of the rear bumper. Just cut it completely off... the more I think about it the more I think it wouldn't look too bad if done properly. Any one got a spare rear bumper? doesn't have to look good and bottom can be torn to shreads lol.

g8ter 05-15-2012 01:57 AM

Eh not my cup of tea, center exhaust on the LFA though....

c0ldf1ame 05-15-2012 01:42 PM

center exhaust only looks good when they're dual outlets

linuxadickt 05-25-2012 09:56 AM

I'm about to take a whack at making a center look good. I'll post pix when I'm done. will be awhile so i might be poking a dead thread with a stick of pictures. it'll be for my turbo setup to get rid of bends and just go straight out

stickmantijuana 09-04-2012 09:04 AM

any luck with it yet? i'm about to start to make rotor shape hole with straight exhaust sticking through it with diffusers on each side. i'm also throwing out the bottom part of the bumper I also thought of taking exhaust pipe on either side of the license plate, but it would just look way wrong. post some pictures if you're close, or not. i think we're probably thinking the similar design.

Danmn858 09-07-2012 06:57 PM

Yeah I'm not really a fan for a few reasons:
1) empty shrouds
2) no car has ever pulled off a single center exhaust
3) melting the shit out of your bumper

Danmn858 09-07-2012 06:58 PM

Maybe with a bumper that didnt have shrouds (cant think of any off the top of my head) and a dual outlet center it would look good.

I have center exhaust on my car and I love the way it sounds and how it looks, but I fabricated everything myself.

I figured I would post these. I had full 4" from turbo back splitting into two 4" pipes in the rear. I thought it was a bit too loud once I swapped engines to a 13B-RE and always had interest in a center exit exhaust so I worked this up. It sounds great and its quieter and I can't feel any noticeable power loss from the original 4" split.

Cheers!

Probably the best attempt yet. Still not liking it, may be it does not suit the RX8 based on the stock bumper.

Perhaps a custom designed bumper with three outlets to make a triangle will work.

this is all i see now:

shadycrew31 06-17-2013 07:04 PM

Looks terrible, but if you like it thats all that matters.

ChrisRX8PR 06-17-2013 07:31 PM

As for the bumper, the entire rear section is getting changed, this photo was minutes after finishing the exhaust and I had done nothing to make it cohesive with the rest of the car. I have every intention of changing it to match.

Either way I appreciate the input from everyone :)

I will probably end up modifying the rear to something similar to either of these two pictures:

http://lunar.thegamez.net/car/2011-c...m-1280x850.jpg

or

slvrstreak 07-16-2013 09:27 AM

best one I think I've seen
any update?

I may have something for you guys soon
depending on how the resonator fits I'll either do this or have the exhaust coming from in front of the rear wheel
straight pipe was WAY too loud btw :)

And quick videos for the curious:Also, I modified my OE muffler to also have a center exit...🙌

TeamRX8 10-14-2020 11:39 AM

I’ve seen an actuated valve added to the OE muffler center point to dump exhaust out directly that way on demand too. It’s really more of a noise generator than actual performance enhancer.

Yours looks cool though. 😎

So far the header wrap and thermal tape is holding very strong. My previous setup was bare metal on the plastic and it shockingly didn't deform anything (ran that setup for ~5 years now).

Not to mention things moving around going over hards bumps and such.

Funny enough, after uninstalling my rear sway bar for autox - I found my aged tanabe coil overs are more streetable without the bar. But I actively avoid as many man/pot holes as humanly possible, so I'm sure that adds up.

actually I misunderstood how it’s configured and retracted most of that.

in the first picture above you can see the aftermarket muffler going straight to it. Looks like a Spintech or Flowmaster chamber/deflector type without packing.

or rather just click on his blog link, it’s a spintech

TeamRX8 02-13-2021 07:53 PM

looks like he had an open version previously similar to what you were thinking, or it would probably sound the same; loud
